Degree of Closeness in Relationships Less Important Than One Might Think

  While conventional wisdom dictates that the quality of a romantic relationship is directly tied to the level of closeness the couple experiences, a new study shows that it might be more complicated then that. Researchers have found that it’s not how close a person feels to his or her partner that determines the quality of the relationship. Instead, it’s the level of satisfaction each partner feels about the degree of closeness in the relationship that matters most. “Our study found that people who yearn for a more intimate partnership and people who crave more distance are equally at risk for having a problematic relationship,” the study’s lead author, David M. Dating in Early Sobriety

It’s common for us to hear “don’t get into a relationship in your first year of sobriety” throughout the rooms of recovery among people that have come before us. Some people will take this seriously and become stringent about not dating, flirting or sleeping with anyone for a full year. Others may jump into relationship after relationship despite the consequences, desperately trying one more time to make it work. While the whole not dating in the first year is a just suggestion, it can hold merit for some. For us alcoholics it’s not uncommon that our romantic and sexual past is checkered and pocked with bad decisions and regret.
