Bipolar Treatment Facilities

Bipolar disorder is a condition that can make living a normal, happy life seem impossible to achieve. Manic depression treatment is available, and by attending the appropriate treatment centers and taking the necessary medications, those affected by bipolar disorder can live a normal and productive life.

Treatment for Bipolar Disorder

For individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder, seeking treatment is imperative in order to maintain stability in your own life and the lives of your family and friends. Manic and depressive episodes can cause you to do things you would not normally do.

Because of the drastic nature of its symptoms, bipolar disorder treatment should begin immediately after an individual is diagnosed. A wide variety of treatment is available due to the number of individuals this disorder affects.

Treatment for Bipolar disorder differs with each patient. Depending on the severity of the disorder, individuals may be able to cope with medication alone; If symptoms are severe, counseling or psychotherapy is recommended.

Medication

Several drugs have been formulated to provide a patient with preventative treatments for depressive or manic episodes. Some can also be taken during an episode. Your doctor will prescribe the one that is best for you as determined by the severity of the disorder.

Mood Stabilizers

Mood stabilizers include Lithium, Valproic Acid and other drugs that are anticonvulsant. These can be taken to prevent an episode as well as lessen episode severity if it has already begun. Most individuals are prescribed some type of mood stabilizer, regardless of the severity of their disorder.

Antidepressants

Some popular antidepressants include Zoloft (sertraline) and Prozac (fluoxetine). Some doctors believe that antidepressants are ineffective on bipolar patients because they can cause a manic episode to arise. In other cases, they can prolong or intensify episodes. Antidepressants should only be taken when prescribed.

Antipsychotics

Antipsychotics should be used only to treat severe episodes related to bipolar disorder. These include hallucinations or an individual losing their ability to stay in touch with reality. This is primarily because antipsychotics are associated with side effects that can become permanent, such as uncontrollable movement or damaged motor skills.

Treatment Centers

Like most treatment centers, facilities that specialize in mental disorders such as bipolar offer both inpatient and outpatientprograms. Some may offer only residential care or only outpatient care, but most have both. You can be seen at a treatment center in addition to taking prescribed medications, but they are usually considered alternative treatment for bipolar disorder.

Outpatient Care

While outpatient care can be helpful for those with less severe symptoms, it can also be supplementary treatment if the patient is already receiving care via another outlet. Outpatient care is not limited to only those who have minor cases of bipolar.

With outpatient care, patients may continue to live a relatively normal life by continuing treatment without needing to take leave from work, school or other obligations. It is similar to inpatient care in that both group and individual counseling sessions are often included in the therapy. However, 24 hour care that residential treatment centers offer is not an option with outpatient facilities.

Residential Care

Residential treatment for Bipolar disorder is designed to give 24 hour support and care to individuals suffering from the disorder. This is often supplementary to medications but the bipolar depression treatment offered at these facilities is usually based on counseling, psychotherapy and group therapy. Many facilities even include family counseling in order to help reestablish or mend the relationships that can be damaged as a result of the disorder.
