An Untreated Epidemic

An Untreated Epidemic

“Imagine discovering an illness that kills about 85,000 people annually, and then imagine that we identify only one in 20 of those people – even though we have effective treatments that can be administered by primary care physicians or specialists.  Wouldn’t there be an outcry to establish a national approach to improving access to quality care for this disease?”  These words are not a mystery or a riddle – they are a straightforward description of … Read entire article »

Halfway House vs. Sober Living House

[Editors Note: This post provided by our friends at Hickory Wind Ranch, an Austin sober living environment and transitional house.] The difference between a halfway house and sober living house isn’t much. They both fall under the category of “transitional home”. Transitional homes date back to the late 1920s and 30s and were created to counter the rise of alcoholism and addiction that swept the nation during the Great Depression and Prohibition era.  These shelters served as spaces where people could find sobriety, and at the time were referred to as as halfway homes or three-quarter houses.  Bill W. and Dr. Robert Holbrook Smith, founders of AA, pioneered the sober living movement. Today, transitional homes that cater to those dealing with addiction recovery are often called “sober living houses”, while today’s halfway … Read entire article »

Regaining Trust from Family in Sobriety

Regaining Trust from Family in Sobriety

I had just completed a 90 day treatment program. I was 20 years old, sober and floating around somewhere in the San Fernando Valley. I had no home, no job and no money. I had lost my car and my cell phone due to consequences of my alcoholism. I returned home to the San Francisco Bay Area with my tail between my legs hoping my family would provide me with these material things. After all, … Read entire article »

Treatment in UK vs Treatment in US

Treatment in UK vs Treatment in US

Having been in primary care facilities in both London and America I find it very interesting to see the differences in the quality of treatment and the service provided. It is almost astounding to me at how the therapy can differ so much in both variety and progressiveness and the all-around effectiveness of the treatment you receive. Not to sound like I am going to be insulting any country or even treatment facility in particular, … Read entire article »

Sex and Sobriety – Losing my Virginity for the Second Time

Sex and Sobriety – Losing my Virginity for the Second Time

Being a newly sober woman, sex was the first, and at times, the only, thing on my mind. After years of drinking and using, my sky-high libido trumped any nervous feelings I had of getting back into the bedroom. I wasn’t only new to sobriety; I had also just ended a three-year relationship of mental abuse, manipulation and cheating. The pink cloud of sobriety gave me newfound confidence – I felt invincible. Physically, I felt better … Read entire article »

Following Direction to a New Way of Life

Following Direction to a New Way of Life

In the last three years I have had many attempts at getting sober. I went to rehab numerous times, went through detox programs, and even tried to relocate. None of these measures ever worked. As I arrived to my sixth rehab on a cold winter day in Pennsylvania I vowed to do something different. I didn’t necessarily know what I was going to do differently, but I knew a change had … Read entire article »

I’ll Trade You Two Smokes For Your Klonopin

I’ll Trade You Two Smokes For Your Klonopin

The clients paced the rehab premises in the early morning sunshine like jail inmates awaiting their verdicts. They sure looked like a glum lot, sloppily dressed in their pajamas and slippers (what I would later term “rehab uniforms”) but, having just come from an intervention served cold, I was probably the most glum of all. How did I end up here? One tour of the grounds and two lungfuls of secondhand smoke later, I met my … Read entire article »
