Prom Season – DUI Season for Teenage Drivers

Prom Season – DUI Season for Teenage Drivers

When prom season approaches, teens and parents alike picture limousines, prom parties, and extravagantly dressed young people, giggling and excited. It’s a time for high school seniors to enjoy themselves, and go out with a bang. Unfortunately, there are too many teens during this time that go out, and never make it back home, often due to drinking and driving. These accidents are fatal all too often, and the consequences for driving under the influence … Read entire article »

Are Boston Police Lagging in DUI Arrests or Just Getting Priorities Straight?

Are Boston Police Lagging in DUI Arrests or Just Getting Priorities Straight?

The city of Boston, MA made only 241 drunken driving arrests in 2012, far fewer than cities of similar size and a sharp decline from recent years. As a result, some Bostonians are beginning to inquire about the aggressiveness of its police force. In comparison, Denver has a slightly smaller population but made more than 3,000 drunken-driving arrests last year. That is more than ten times higher than Boston. Police in Charlotte, N.C. made nearly … Read entire article »

Kerry Kennedy’s Ambien Haze

Kerry Kennedy, daughter of Robert and Ethel Kennedy and ex-wife of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, had Zolpidem, a generic version of the popular sleep aid Ambien, in her system when she crashed her SUV into a tractor trailer according to a toxicology report.  A Kennedy family spokesman had previously claimed that the author and human rights activist was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the accident occurred. Kennedy was arrested on suspicions of DWI in the early hours of Friday, 13 July 2012.  Subsequent breathalyzer, blood, and urine tests at a local hospital revealed no drugs or alcohol in her system.  What kind of punishment she faces will depend largely on whether the Ambien is determined to have adversely affected her driving.  Witnesses told police Kennedy was … Read entire article »

Drugs Replacing the Drink?

Drugs Replacing the Drink?

My father has told me stories of when the drinking age was eighteen…once upon a time back in the seventies and situations in movies like Dazed and Confused, where they had trunk loads of ice cold beer, and driving drunk was a regular affair.  Times were different back then and drinking was more acceptable in our society and the guidelines were less strict.  In our culture today, our government takes drinking offenses to the next … Read entire article »

DWI vs. DUI: What’s the Diff?

DWI vs. DUI: What’s the Diff?

With the arrest of NBA point guard and future Hall of Famer Jason Kidd for DWI, less than three days after inking a three-year deal with the New York Knicks worth $9.5 million, people all over the globe are scratching their heads (and other body parts) and asking the question: “What’s the difference between a DWI and a DUI—if any?” DWI, or driving while intoxicated /impaired, and DUI, which stands for driving under the influence, would … Read entire article »

The Hidden Costs of Binge Drinking in America

The Hidden Costs of Binge Drinking in America

A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control about the widespread damage done by binge drinking posted some whopping costs for both the consumers themselves and society in general. Locked Up But Not Loaded: Sober Inside The Lynwood Correctional Facility

Locked Up But Not Loaded: Sober Inside The Lynwood Correctional Facility

A couple of years ago, on a steady diet of booze and sedatives, waking up in my car with pee all over me and the seat, I would have laughed in disbelief at the thought that one day I would have to clean up the wreckage of my alcohol and drug abuse. I choose drugs over everything and everybody. I was reckless. The scariest part came when I unconsciously chose drugs over life itself, … Read entire article »

Drunk Driver Kills Four Year Old Boy

Sunday, July 11th, in San Jose, California, a family of four, stopped on the side of the highway due to car troubles, landed up being tragic for the family. Their four year old son was killed due to a drunk driver smashing into the families broken down truck. The father was left with a broken rib and broken jaw. His little boy was pronounced dead less than two hours after the crash. 5:53 p.m. on Sunday the family pulled over to the west shoulder on the highway, hoping to figure out what was wrong with their car. The boy’s mother and twelve year old daughter both got out of the truck. The father on the other hand was unbuckling his little boy. Before he could get him out of the … Read entire article »

Man Faces 24 Years in Prison After 10th DUI

Driving drunk is a very common arrest all over the country but for one man, multiple convictions of drunk driving is his forte in life. Gordon Vanderark, 52 years old, has nine drunk driving convictions over his head and was just found yet again, drunk behind the wheel. In my opinion, this man has an alcohol problem and should most certainly be kept behind bars. This is exactly what the courts in Wheaton, Illinois have planned for him. When the cop stopped Gordon last July at a traffic light, his shirt was unbuttoned, and had only one shoe on. He reeked of alcohol and could barely put a sentence together. He admitted to drinking that night and left the cop with no doubt to pull him over because the trunk … Read entire article »
