Demerol Facts

Demerol is the brand name for a generic narcotic called meperidine hydrochloride or pethidine. It is administered in pill form, syrup or injected. It is a fast-acting opioid used for the relief of moderate to severe pain.

As with any type of pain reliever, you should always take Demerol exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Often times, with pain relievers, you may develop a tolerance to the effects. In other words, you may require more of the medication to achieve the same effects originally desired. If this happens to you, do not increase the dose without talking to your doctor about it first. Perhaps this is the first time you have ever had to take a pain killer, other than Tylenol, or other over-the-counter medications. Demerol is highly potent and a fast-acting drug. It also has a tendency for dependence for some patients. Not only does Demerol relieve pain, but it may also affect you mentally as well as physically. It is recommended that you never drive a car, or attempt to operate any type of machinery while under the influence of Demerol. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding you should never take any medications without consulting your doctor. As with most medications, there are possible side effects, which may include:

*Nausea
*Light-headedness
*Dizziness
*Sweating
*Vomiting

If these conditions persist, you will want to call your doctor right away. But do not stop taking the medication without the direction of your physician. He may want to take you off Demerol and try something else to help relieve your pain, however, he may decide to taper you off gradually to avoid some uncomfortable withdraw symptoms. Some of these withdraw symptoms may include:

*Anxiety
*Insomnia
*Restlessness
*Irritability
