If you are struggling with a drug addiction or mental problem, the most important decision you make will be what type of treatment you choose to undergo. The treatment facility you choose can determine your chances of leading a healthy, happy life. Choosing a residential treatment center to assist you during your struggle is a positive and wise decision that you will value for years to come.

Treatment Programs

There are several treatment programs that are offered almost everywhere in the United States-you are likely to find them within only a few miles of where you live. While hospitals and clinics will have treatment programs available for addicts, a more personable atmosphere is obtained at a center where the patient is constantly in the company of others who have the same problem; this is called residential treatment.

Residential treatment centers, or RTCs, are less common than outpatient counseling programs. You are less likely to find one close to where you live, and they may be considerably more expensive. In spite of the cost and distance, the benefits one can gain from their facilities are exceptional.

Residential Treatment Programs

At residential facilities, the patient lives at the facility for a long period of time. Their actual length of stay will depend on the severity of their addiction, but they could remain at the center for anywhere from 30 days to several months.

Cost of residential treatment tends to be expensive because of the wide variety of care that is offered. All living expenses including food, and room and board are included, not to mention the professional care that the patient will have available to them 24 hours a day. This care includes psychologists, doctors, group counselors, fitness instructors, etc. Most residential treatment centers require that their staff not only be qualified and licensed in their field, but also loving and caring individuals who have the patient's best interests at heart.

Adolescent Residential Treatment
Adolescent treatment centers are much like a boarding school in that they provide necessary schooling for children with mental problems or substance issues. This way, these children do not risk falling behind in their studies.

Most treatment centers designed for children and adolescents have programs that center around the interests of that age group. Sports teams and art or thespian clubs are often provided as activities to help strengthen relationships among peers.

Mental Health Residential Treatment
With mental health residential treatment, you can be sure that the patient is living in a safe, happy environment that is suited for his or her needs. While most mental treatment centers are "locked down", meaning the residents have little option of leaving the facility, every attempt is made to allow the patients to live a relatively normal life. While some of these institutions offer permanent resident care, many patients are able to leave after a few months of therapy.

Residential Drug Treatment

Residential treatment centers are meant to attract patients who are willing to do whatever possible to live a normal life. Therefore, treatment is more strenuous and controlled than an outpatient clinic.

For those with substance abuse problems, the first step that must be taken toward sobriety is detoxification, or detox. This is a very wearisome process for the individual and very hazardous to his or her health if it is not overseen by trained professionals. You may rest assured that, as a patient, you will receive counseling as well as medical observation while your body readapts.

After detoxification, a period of relaxation and coping begins. The resident becomes part of the community and learns to live a normal life without chemical dependency. Forceful monitoring systems are usually implemented at the facility to ensure the absence of substances.
