Drug Rehab

Drug rehabilitation, often called “drug rehab” or just “rehab” is a term used to describe a facility that treats all different kinds of drug addictions. If this is your first time researching different treatment facilities you will definitely want to visit several places before making a decision. There are many different types of treatment rehabilitation centers that operate in different styles, quality and levels of comfort.
First of all, you may need the help of an interventionist who is qualified to assist you in choosing the type of rehabilitation services that you or your loved one may best benefit from. Here are some of the types of dependencies that you may be suffering from:
  • Alcohol dependency
  • Amphetamine dependency
  • Prescription drugs
  • Heroin
  • Marijuana
  • Cocaine
  • Hallucinogens
Being honest from the beginning and communicating all of your dependencies will be a big help when narrowing down a few choice rehab centers. It is not uncommon for a person to have an obvious problem with alcohol in addition to a problem with prescription pills. Don’t be afraid to lay out all the issues on the table. This may be your one and only chance to tackle all your demons at once. Several drug rehabilitation centers have experienced and trained professionals that can help you with all of your struggles in one facility.
Depending on how far into your addiction you have come will factor into what level of rehabilitation care you will need. Not all treatment centers are locked down facilities. Here are some types of drug rehabilitation facilities that are offered:
  • inpatient rehab
  • outpatient rehab
  • aftercare treatment
Basically, what inpatient rehabilitation means is that if your situation is one that requires you to be an inpatient, you will pack a bag of clothes and personal belongings and check into a center where you will have room, a bed, and in some cases a roommate or two. Your day will consist of a lot of structure. You may be required to attend several educational groups during the day, you may be required to do some household chores, and you may also have the opportunity to attend some outside activities. Outside activities consist of anything from rope courses, rock climbing, equine therapy, and art therapy or 12-step groups. Inpatient rehabilitation gives the addict a great opportunity to learn the daily skills we need to get back out there into the real world and function without the use of drugs as a healthy member of society.

Outpatient rehabilitations are another level of care where you would still live in your own home, but you would be required to attend educational classes at the rehab facility. It is similar to going to college and living at home.   You are still required to attend a certain amount of courses, but you do not live at the facility.

Finally, aftercare treatment is the level you would attend after completing a primary or transitional level of care at a treatment center. Basically aftercare teaches you how to maintain the education you received at higher levels of treatment. Classes may consist of relapse prevention, 12-step groups, and you may even have the opportunity to “buddy” another individual who is newer to the program than you are.

The point here is that treatment is available at all levels. Most treatment centers will meet you where you are in your addiction. It’s not a cookie cutter approach. Based on your assessment and history, the rehabilitation center will help to find the best level of care for you, so that you can achieve the sobriety and quality of life you so greatly deserve.
