we believe the 12 steps are spiritual principles for living.  Nothing that we know of provides better spiritual guidelines for anyone to live by and nothing provides the kind of support that is found in AA. But it is primarily a spiritual program. It does not address, nor does it try to address, the physiological aspect of recovery. Nor do most treatment programs that are 12 Step based.  Maybe we should just say neither do most treatment programs.  That is why programs like Alta Mira that integrate physiological recovery (especially in the form of nutritional therapy) into a program that provides spiritual, social, behavioral, and psychological guidelines are so needed and fill a gap that we have been missing in recovery programs.
