The state of Vermont is one of the most beautiful from a scenic point of view. However, the growing drug addiction problems in the state are an underlying cause of increased domestic violence and a growth in substance abuse based crime. Addiction recovery for every substance abuse is what the state is aiming for with its partnership between the state and national public/private organizations. Vermont is determined to follow a plan of “Education, Intervention, Prevention, Recovery, Research and Treatment.”
Now available to residents of Vermont are numerous treatment centers, hospital facilities and residences designed to treat and cure the addict while they recover. Drug rehabilitation is foremost on the list as its withdrawal can be the most difficult and dangerous. Alcohol abuse has a longer withdrawal period that is not as traumatic on the body. Through therapy sessions and support, in groups and singly, addicts come to recignize their problems and why those problems exist for them. Breakthrough therapy is the first step on the road to a cure.
It has been proven that drug or alcohol abuse and addiction can change the personality of anyone over a period of time. A calm and caring person can easily become a nervous and violent individual when on drugs or alcohol, or both.
Vermont’s Department of Health-Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs are designed by people who have either gone through addictions themselves and/or by people who work primarily with addicts and their families. The programs are progressive and they are working.
