"Play the tape" means think about the conseqences before picking up a drink or drug. Play back what has always happened in the past. It has taken me years to learn how to play the tape and not shoot myself in the foot again and again.

I have relapsed many times over the years, thinking "it will be different this time" every single time. Sure, it has made me homeless, almost killed me, taken everything, but THIS TIME i will handle it. The results have always been the same for me: jails, institutions and near-death experiences. PLAY THE TAPE!
