Peyote
Peyote is a small cactus without spines, also known as the lophophora williamsii. It typically grows in the northern parts of Mexico and the southern areas in Texas. This plant produces a psychedelic alkaloid known as mescaline. The mescaline is gathered by drying the “buttons” of the cactus and grounding them into a brown powder which is then taken either orally or may be injected. Peyote is a very bitter substance and, when taken orally, is usually mixed with orange juice, soda, tea, or milk. This hallucinogenic drug has been called “the sacred medicine” and used by Native Americans in traditional religious ceremonies. Peyote is commonly referred to by users as devil’s weed, mescaline, or buttons. Peyote effects are similar to those of LSD and can last up to 12 hours. The effects of the drug on each individual varies depending on the user’s weight/size and the quantity that has been consumer or injected.
Common effects of Peyote include:
- Nausea
- Increased body temperature
- Increased blood pressure
- Increased heart rate
- Numbness
- Loss of appetite
- Weakness
- Sleeplessness
Some other negative effects can be:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Vomiting
- Anxiety
- Fear of losing control
- Fear of insanity
- Diarrhea
- tremors
- Unconsciousness
- Respiratory failures
- Coma
- Death
As with many hallucinogens, there are some other long-term effects that can occur. For example, some users may experience “flashbacks”. This is where they feel the same hallucinogenic effects long after the last usage. This can happen days, weeks, months or even years afterwards.
The way that hallucinogenic drugs work is by directly affecting the central nervous system. You may experience a feeling of losing touch with reality. Hallucinogenic drugs impair your judgment. You might feel like there are physical things you can do because of the sense of euphoria. You might feel like you can fly or that you can escape injury or death because of the mystical effect peyote has on your mind. You should never attempt to drive a car or operate heavy machinery while under the influence of peyote or any other drug. You could end up being the cause of a very serious accident where you or someone else are injured or killed.
As with most hallucinogenic drugs, you may not become addicted to the hallucinogenic drug itself, however, there are still dangers. You may be experimenting with other drugs, or actively using alcohol or other recreational drugs while using peyote. You never know how the combination of drugs may affect your mind or body. If you feel you are over your head and need some help quitting, there are solutions. Talk to someone you trust, call a therapist or counselor. You can even attend a 12-step program meeting anonymously and get some help and advice from other people who understand.
