Mushrooms
Mushrooms or “magic mushrooms” are fungi that contain psychedelic substances. These substances are psilocybin and psilocinis. These are psychedelic drugs that have similar effects to those of LSD. On the streets, they are called “magic mushrooms” or “shrooms”.
Historically, hallucinogenic drugs have been used in many different cultural rituals. Mushrooms can be seen in paintings and statues indicating that their use dated back centuries. However, in more recent times, “magic mushrooms” became particularly popular after an article was printed in LIFE magazine in 1957. This article talked about Valentina and R. Gordon Wasson and their experiences while participating in a mushroom ceremony in Mexico. Following the articles publishing, Timothy Leary, an advocate of psychedelic drug research, went to Mexico himself to experience the effects of psilocybin mushrooms personally. He came back from Mexico with a determination to experiment and promote the use of these psychedelic drugs with other like- minded individuals. This had a huge impact on the hippie culture of that time.
The effects of psilocybin mushrooms will vary from person to person. It is completely unpredictable how a person will respond to any psychoactive drug. Psilocin is the compound in the mushroom that creates the hallucinogenic effects. Some users claim to have had “spiritual” experiences that were enlightening, while other users had, what some call a “bad trip”, and were terribly frightened by the hallucinogenic effects. The effects of the drug are dependent upon how much of the drug is taken and what the mind set is of the person taking it.
Some other effects of psilocybin mushrooms are:
- Disorientation
- Seeing colors
- Images changing shape or color or size
- Walls or rooms “breathing”
- Seeing “trails” after moving objects
- Distorted sounds
- Euphoria
- Uncontrollable laughter
- Loss of appetite
- Numbness
- Nausea
- Pupil dilation
- Extreme emotional sensitivity
- Anxiety
- Extreme fear
- Paranoia
- Magnified ideas
Although mushrooms are not considered addictive or even toxic, the dangers arise because you don’t really know how your body or your mind will react to such a drug. You could be ingesting a poisonous mushroom, not knowing the difference, and become ill. Under the influence of mushrooms your judgment may become impaired and you may feel like you can jump down a flight of stairs, only to find out that you have broken your ankles. You may unfortunately find yourself behind the wheel of a car, driving at dangerous speeds, not completely aware of what you are doing and be the cause of a terrible accident. You may have a “bad trip” that triggers an underlying mental disorder and leaves you emotionally scarred. It’s unpredictable.
Sometimes you “try” drugs just to see how it feels, or you try them because your friends do, or you may be trying to escape from something emotionally. There are so many other ways to enjoy life, completely sober and safe. If you think you may need help, reach out to someone.
