Desoxyn is the brand name of a methamphetamine used to treat children suffering from ADHD and exogenous obesity.  Desoxyn is a central nervous system stimulate that acts as a substrate at the seretonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine neurotransmitters.  It triggers an influx of these neurotransmitters causing them to remain in the body for a longer period of time. For children with ADHD, desoxyn increases attention span. For people suffering from exogenous obesity, a result of compulsive overeating, desyxon works as an appetite reducer. Although desoxyn is used for treatment, it has a high risk of abuse which can lead to chronic use and death.

How does desoxyn work?

Methamphetamine increases and blocks the reuptake of the neurotransmitter dopamine.  This leads to high levels of dopamine inside the body. Dopamine is responsible for feelings of motivation, excitements, and pleasure. The rapid release of this chemical results in feelings of euphoria.  Chronic use occurs when there has been a chemical and molecular change in the brain. This results in compulsive drug seeking and use.

Desoxyn Abuse

Tolerance for desoxyn builds up within two weeks of first use. Therefore a psychological and physical dependence can occur very early within use. While using the drug, psychological effects include, euphoria, anxiety, increased libido, irritability, self esteem, and energy. Physical effects of use include, dry mouth, head ache, anorexia, restlessness, dilated pupils, increased blood pressure, increased sugar levels, and sweating.

Patients using desoxyn often increase their dosage in order to maintain euphoric effects of digesting the drug. If desoxyn use is abruptly stopped, the person using can go through intense withdrawal.

Symptoms of Desoxyn withdrawal

Fatigue, depression, dermatoses, insomnia, personality changes, irritability, nausea, and vomiting

Results of Chronic Desoxyn Usage

Tremors, brain damage, formication, rhabdomyolysis, hallucinations, hyperreflexia, hypertension, cardiac arrest, schizophrenia, convulsions, coma, and death

Desoxyn Treatment

Desoxyn use and withdrawal can be life-threatening. In order to prevent fatal withdrawal syndromes, users can enter a detox facility where they are monitored and looked after by detox specialists and doctors. Current research has shown that stimulates, such as dextroamphetamine can break the cycle of addiction to Desoxyn similar to the usage of methadone in the treatment for heroin addiction. Desoxyn abusers can attend 12 step recovery programs such as Crystal Meth Anonymous (CMA). Treatment centers are also available to aid in the recovery of Desoxyn addiction.
