Barbiturates
Barbiturates, also known as “downers” are
depressants that work by depressing the activity in an individual’s entire nervous system. Barbiturates are typically prescribed for people suffering from severe sleeping problems, such as insomnia and in some cases, to effectively manage epilepsy. The effects that these types of depressant
drugs can produce generally tend to vary for each person; however there are some universal outcomes that result from taking both low and high doses of barbiturates. Some common types of barbiturates include tranquilizers and Quaaludes. Additionally, Ambien is also another type of depressant that has become increasingly popular among people suffering from sleeplessness.
The Effects of Depressants
The following effects can often result within an individual when taking both low and high doses of barbiturate drugs:
- Decrease in motor activity
- Feeling of sedation and drowsiness
- Excitement
- Feeling of euphoria
- Slurred speech
- Weariness
- Decrease in cognitive activity
- Impaired judgment
- Inducement of anesthesia
Drug Info – Quaaludes & Tranquilizers
Similar to other types of barbiturates,
Quaaludes have also been used for treatment of anxiety and the inducement of sleep. However, due to the high feeling of elation and euphoria that Quaaludes are known to produce, they have a tendency to be overused and abused. According to Wisegeek.com, high doses of Quaaludes can lead to depression, problems with muscle coordination and difficulty speaking. A drug overdose on Quaaludes can also be very dangerous and cause serious health repercussions, such as kidney failure, heart attack, convulsions and even death. It’s also important to note that a drug interaction with other depressants, such as alcohol can be equally dangerous and increase the effects on an individual’s nervous system.
Tranquilizers also act as depressants to the central nervous system and are most often used to calm and relax, generate sleep or decrease an individual’s anxiety level. Tranquilizers are types of barbiturates that can either be injected or swallowed in the form of a pill. There are generally two specific types of tranquilizers; major and minor. Major tranquilizers, commonly referred to as “anti-psychotics” are used to treat those who suffer from mental illness. Minor tranquilizers on the other hand, are used to reduce
anxiety and induce sleep. As with other types of depressant drugs, tranquilizers can cause dependence and tolerance.
Ambien Sleeping Pills
Ambien are popular types of sleeping pills that doctors usually prescribe to patients who are suffering from insomnia. Although it’s a prescription-based drug meant for short-term usage only, people can easily become addicted to Ambien. It’s also important to remember that Ambien is specifically meant to help people fall asleep fast and therefore should be taken accordingly, and only after consulting with a qualified health professional. Because it helps a person fall asleep quickly, it’s always best to take ambien right before going to bed. Consuming the drug without going straight to sleep can lead to the risk of saying or doings things you are unable to recall.
It’s also never a good idea to combine Ambien with other drugs, especially
alcohol as that can increase the severity of any side effects. Although the advantage of taking Ambien is getting a good nights’ sleep quickly, there are also some disadvantages to consider before taking the pill. For example, the longer an individual takes ambien, the higher amount of dosage is required to achieve the same effects. Additionally, people taking ambien may develop mood swings and become increasingly irritable. It’s clear to see that there are definitely both benefits and drawbacks to taking ambien. Therefore, the best thing to do is talk with your doctor in order to determine whether ambien is right for you.
