The Truthful Clichés of AA

The Truthful Clichés of AA

Fake it until you make it. Just keep coming back. Stick around until the miracle happens. These are all little things that you hear in 12-step meetings all over the place. Clichés and silly sounding lines, but they hold some truth to them. They’re annoying to hear, especially if you’re new or struggling. It can feel like you’ll never make it, or what’s the point of coming back, or when’s this supposed miracle going to … Read entire article »

Burning out on Alcoholics Anonymous

Someone once cracked a joke about having to attend “Anonymous Anonymous” because they were addicted to meetings, AA, etc.  For a moment, I thought that they were serious and my jaw dropped at the thought of something as absurd as a fellowship called Anonymous Anonymous actually existing. I should note that this was during one of my first experiences with recovery and I quickly discovered that this Anonymous Anonymous nonsense was a joke.  Whether or not this demonstrates the quality of humor that floats around “the rooms” is a topic for another day, but it did confirm some of my own doubts about meeting attendance, sponsorship and Bill W. worship – is there such a thing as too much recovery? Being human, many individuals in early recovery and even long term … Read entire article »

The Many Varities of 12 Step Programs

The Many Varities of 12 Step Programs

As an addict, it is in my nature to flood my brain’s pleasure centers. After a night of riding the tidal waves, I come to in a pool of spilled bourbon and stale sweat. I begin to feel at home in the deep end, dependent on the bottom feeders. What begins as a problem with benzos and alcohol might grow to include codependency or addictive thrill-seeking behaviors. I begin to associate the desperation of the morning … Read entire article »

Safe and Sober Vacation

Safe and Sober Vacation

Once individuals are grounded in their sobriety, traveling often becomes an attractive option.  While traveling and using often went together, whether it was a cross country road trip with a pipe or a cruise with a lot of booze, a sober vacation is normally a new experience.  There are several structured sober travel companies that provide opportunities for sober individuals or groups to travel in large groups in order to provide 12-step meetings, support, sober … Read entire article »

Remaining Anonymous in AA

As a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, anonymity is often a very pressing issue and topic of controversy. It is one of those grey areas of the program open to dispute. The 11th and 12th traditions both deal in the subject.  At the group level, I find that it keeps the common good of the organization as top priority: “… ever reminding us to place principles before personalities”. Not one person takes precedence over another. We are all equals.  Our careers, financial well-being, social status, our time sober, our race, religion, or creed: none of these issues should be taken into consideration at any meeting.  Not only that, but, if one is of high social stature, their word may be given a higher value by another. Also, the program is to … Read entire article »

Exercising Moderation with Caffeine

Exercising Moderation with Caffeine

One of the things that moved me, besides the bravery of the speakers and the friendliness of the people, when I first went to AA meetings was that there was coffee and cake. I must admit I am always impressed and overjoyed by hospitality and like sharing a nosh with people. There is magic in having a simple cup of tea with someone. Coffee, tea and chocolate all contain caffeine. This can be an amazing … Read entire article »

Dope Sick Detox

Dope Sick Detox

I knew my last fix would arrive shortly upon waking up from an entirely unpleasant half-sleep in the backseat of my car. It was a quick drive to my favorite coffee shop where inside there was a restroom with two trustworthy locks on the door. I have always been a committed practitioner of making sure no one would have the opportunity to catch me in the act. After shooting up most my heroin, I stepped … Read entire article »

When Does a Young Person need Treatment?

When Does a Young Person need Treatment?

It’s so hard to tell when a young person needs treatment.  On the one hand, we can so easily write off a young addict or their psychopathological behaviors to youthful folly.  On the other hand, at what point are the behaviors so out of control and dangerous or the distress so great that treatment is necessary?  Often it is not the young person who seeks out the treatment but a relative.  The parent or guardian … Read entire article »
