Confessions of a Doctor Shopper

Confessions of a Doctor Shopper

With the government trying to eliminate international drug smuggling, and law enforcement agencies cracking down on drug street sales, addicts have found a new way to get their fix.  It’s called doctor shopping, and it involves visiting numerous doctors and pharmacies in efforts to get prescribed more medication to feed their addictions. There have been ongoing efforts to track and prosecute the people who participate in this, but I doubt the ability of these programs … Read entire article »

Teens Aren’t Taking Their Meds OMG!

Published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, a new U.S. study has found that teens who have mental health issues are not taking their prescribed medications to help deal with them. The study’s researchers interviewed 10,000 children and young teens, ranging from the ages of 13 to 18.  They found that only 15 percent took their medications on a regular basis, which is shocking to psychologists.  This is not, however, a new trend, nor is this problem confined to the United States.  In Australia, kids also aren’t taking their prescribed medication at alarming rates. The WA Youth Affairs Council’s Craig Comrie asserts that this is a huge problem for our youth, stating, “There have been inquiries into this issue in other states which indicate, that in Australia, there are young … Read entire article »

ADHD Medication: Cause or Cure?

Therapy and the diagnosis of mental disorders is becoming a common part of many people’s lives, but people do not always receive proper therapy or diagnosis.  The number of children who are perceived to have the developmental disorder attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is growing rapidly and most of these children are being prescribed medications as part of their treatment plans.  The medications being used are mostly stimulants, many of which contain amphetamine. The fact that amphetamine, known by its street name as speed, is given to children as medication is alarming because it is an addictive psychostimulant drug.  The immediate discontinuation of this medication can cause withdrawal effects ranging from an increased appetite and excessive sleep to mental fatigue and depression, even suicidal ideation.   The short-term physical effects are also problematic for … Read entire article »

Medications Often Prescribed to Youngest Kids in Class

In a new study, it has been revealed that children who are among the youngest in their third grade class population are 50 percent more likely to be prescribed stimulant drugs for attention deficit disorder. According to the study, these younger kids also nearly twice as likely to score low on math, language, and art tests. The research was gathered and compiled by scientists from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.  The study was based on data obtained at a school in Iceland.  Researchers surveyed an unusually large number of children for the study – 11,785 subjects aged 9 to 12.  The study showed that the youngest portion of the third graders scored an average of ten percentiles lower on standardized tests in language, arts, and math compared to the eldest … Read entire article »

ADHD Medications Questionably Prescribed to Young Students

ADHD Medications Questionably Prescribed to Young Students

Prescribing medications for ADHD is a hot-button issue in today’s medical community.  The prevalence of ADHD diagnoses has increased steadily over the last several years and it appears that this trend will continue for some time to come.  I recently came across an article in The New York Times in which a study found that doctors are increasingly prescribing ADHD medication to low-income level students with the belief that it will help them to better … Read entire article »

Antipsychotics: Use With Caution

Antipsychotics: Use With Caution

Antipsychotic drugs have risen to immense popularity in recent years. There are a handful of varieties of these drugs like Seroquel, Risperdal, Zyprexa, Geodon and Abilify. According to IMS Health, the number of annual prescriptions for atypical antipsychotics rose to 54 million. One study revealed that the use of these drugs for conditions aside from those with legal approval more than doubled from 1995 to 2008. Originally these drugs were intended for those with serious … Read entire article »

Fish Oil Useful in Helping Individuals with Mental Illness

In the magazine Archives of General Psychiatry, a study was published showing that fish oil supplements help with preventing mental illness in individuals struggling with such issues. In the study, half of the 81 participants considered to have mental illness were given placebos and the other half were given fish oil supplements for a period of twelve weeks.  At the end of the twelve weeks the results were surprising to say the least. Eleven of the participants who took the placebo developed psychotic disorders, while only two who took the fish oil developed mental problems.  The main factor, believed to have significant qualities in preventing these issues, is the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil.  From previous studies, scientists had already gathered extensive information on how these fatty acids act as a … Read entire article »

Violent Films + Vicodin = Tragic Dark Knight Shootings

Violent Films + Vicodin = Tragic Dark Knight Shootings

Yes, what we watch matters!  The kind of entertainment we spend millions of dollars to make here in Hollywood and then stuff down people’s throats all around the world matters.  The video games that kids play these days are pure violence.  They glorify and encourage it.  Because simulated violence is ubiquitous, we have become desensitized, and shooting a theater full of people becomes a plausible concept for a person who is mentally unstable.   Then, when something … Read entire article »

Sage Stallone’s Death Probed – Possible Overdose

Law enforcement officials investigating the death of actor Sage Stallone are trying to determine what role, if any, drugs contributed to his demise.  TMZ has reported that baggies filled with white powder were found in his room, and their sources believe the power will likely prove to be ground up Hydrocodone, although cocaine is another possibility.  An autopsy has been performed and the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office is awaiting the results of toxicology tests.  No powder was found on his body. Stallone’s body was discovered in his Studio City apartment in the early hours of Friday, 13 July 2012, by a housekeeper after the 36 year-old son of one-time Hollywood heavyweight Sylvester Stallone had not been heard from for several days, causing loved ones to express concern over his well-being.  … Read entire article »

Piracetam: My Experience with Nootropics

Piracetam: My Experience with Nootropics

Who saw that movie Limitless?  I am sorry to reference such a distasteful new-age American film, but the principle behind it has relevance— I promise.  Don’t you wish you could take a drug that broadened your capacity to learn?  This rings particularly true in the realms of intellect and knowledge.  I take pride in what I know and the rate at which I learn things.  My ego likes to give its two-cents in areas of … Read entire article »
