CA Supreme Court allows Cities, Counties to Ban Marijuana Dispensaries

The supreme court of the state of California has ruled that the state’s cities and counties rightfully have the power to ban medical marijuana dispensaries within their respective territories. The state’s highest court made this ruling in a unanimous fashion less than two decades after California first adopted the bill permitting medical marijuana. The court said neither that bill, Proposition 215, nor any “companion measure” prevents local governments from passing their own legislation to outlaw storefront dispensaries. Justice Martin Baxter explained why the court made its ruling, saying, “While some counties and cities might consider themselves well-suited to accommodating medical marijuana dispensaries, conditions in other communities might lead to the reasonable decision that such facilities within their borders, even if carefully sited, well managed, and closely monitored, would present unacceptable local … Read entire article »

New York City Mayor Bloomberg calls medical marijuana “one of the greatest hoaxes of all time”

Although recent surveys demonstrate that public support of marijuana has steadily increased, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg strongly voiced his disapproval of legalization efforts, calling medical marijuana “one of the greatest hoaxes of all time.” “Medical, my… come on. There’s no medical,” Bloomberg told WOR 710 AM, a New York news talk station, CBS New York reports. Just two days before the Mayor hit the airwaves, the New York State Assembly passed a bill that would decrease the punishment for possession of small quantities of marijuana to a fine, rather than an arrest. The next day, New York Physicians for Compassionate Care held a press conference, revealing that over 600 doctors support a medical marijuana program in New York State. Mayor Bloomberg, however, is not backing down from his stance. He referenced … Read entire article »

Cannabis and Canines: A Bad Mix

Cannabis and Canines: A Bad Mix

Just when you thought marijuana had run its course of absurdity in the news and everyday life, it pops right back up with something new – or, at the very least, noteworthy. This time, it has nothing to do with legalization, or human consumption. No, now, the question and problems being considered are those that appear in… I kid you not…dogs. Yes, dogs are now accidentally getting intoxicated by consuming marijuana. Not only that, but the … Read entire article »

New Marijuana Pill May Be More Effective in Treating Pain than Smoking It

New Marijuana Pill May Be More Effective in Treating Pain than Smoking It

Medical Marijuana patients may have a new method of ingesting the drug – in the form of a pill. New research suggests that taking the pill may be more effective at reducing pain than smoking it, with fewer side effects. The study compared the pain tolerance of patients who either smoked marijuana or took the drug dronabinol, a pill containing the active ingredient of marijuana, with patients that took a placebo. Researchers discovered that the pain-reducing … Read entire article »

Reefer Madness: the Growing Acceptance of Marijuana in the United States

On January 15th, 1936, the anti-marijuana motion picture Reefer Madness was released in theaters. The film, directed by Louis Gasnier and starring a cast of unknown actors, begins with two high school students who are cajoled into smoking a joint and highlights the chaos and insanity they experience as a result. After smoking weed, the two teens’ lives descend into evil and sin; the melodramatic events include a hit-and-run accident, manslaughter, suicide, and attempted rape as the characters act with drug-crazed abandon. Though the film was originally bankrolled by a church group to educate parents on the dangers of cannabis use, it was marketed as an exploitation film and infused with more sensationalized scenes when it was released to the public. The core idea of Reefer Madness, though perhaps obscured by … Read entire article »

Parents Force 22-Month-Old Son to Smoke Pot

A young mother and father are in hot water after being caught red-handed while giving their 22-month-old son marijuana from a water pipe or “bong” as they are commonly known. Almost as if feeding the child pot smoke, cell phone video footage portrays the sorry scene of the mother and child, with the water pipe too big for the kid to even hold. Centralia, Washington police reportedly received the video anonymously. After viewing the alarming footage, they subsequently obtained a search warrant and served it on the family involved, the Tyler J. Lee and Rachelle Braaten family. Only after 5 months did the video footage surface. Both parents involved were arrested and taken to jail. Meanwhile, the family’s children, including the 22-month-old, were taken into custody by Child Protective Services. Mrs. … Read entire article »

Marijuana to Help Sleep

Can medical marijuana help insomnia? There are studies out there to support the claim that those who use marijuana in the evenings tend to report a good night’s sleep.   And, there is little doubt that poor sleep patterns can have a negative effect on your life as a whole; not only does it lead to poor health and many minor ailments (which when experienced all at the same time can have the same effect as a major medical condition), but it also leads to poor productivity and time lost from work. In worst case scenarios, of course, lack of sleep can be fatal, in that poor concentration when driving or operating machinery leads to operator mistakes.   Though I am not advocating the use of marijuana as a first line of defense to … Read entire article »

The Medible Industry Lacks Regulation

Cannabis-infused food products, known as “medibles,” are widely available throughout dispensaries within the seventeen US states that permit the use of medical marijuana. However, these foods are technically illegal according to federal law because of the presence of THC and are not subject to the same standards as the rest of the countries’ food industries.  Any and all means of inspecting the overall quality of these products has been left to the medible manufacturing world, and the dispensaries that sell them.  This is becoming an important issue for the medical marijuana community. Medibles are the preferred form of medical marijuana for those who either cannot smoke or require exact doses of THC. Brownies, cookies, soda, mints and capsules are just a few of the different varieties of medibles available at most dispensaries. Some … Read entire article »

DEA says, “Medical marijuana already exists. It’s called Marinol.” Since 1985, doctors have been prescribing Marinol, a prescription drug containing a synthetic form of THC (often referred to as the “active ingredient” in marijuana), to cancer patient and AIDS patients for its anti-nausea and appetite increasing properties.  While several other drugs are considered more effective in preventing vomiting for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, some do not respond well to those medications and do best with Marinol (Harris, 2010).  Marinol is also known as Dronabinol, delta-9-THC, or Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (AHFS, 2010).  As the Food and Drug Administration and National Institution for Drug Abuse delay genuine research around the benefits of marijuana due to the fact that you have to smoke it, (United States Drug Enforcement Agency, 2012) (Harris, 2010)(of course you could just eat it), … Read entire article »
