12-Step Meeting Compatibility

If you are a drug addict who is relying on alcoholics anonymous to provide the help and support you need to stay sober, you may experience some compatibility issues. I was once told that AA meetings are the same as any other 12 step meeting, because you can substitute your drug of choice (if it is something other than alcohol, wherever the steps ,big book or speaker mentions alcohol. Please let me say that after thorough investigation, this is NOT true. AA meetings do not provide perfect universal appeal. I have been to well over 100 AA meetings in the past several months. During most of that time, I thought that going to these meetings would benefit me as much as any other meeting would. However, these meetings focused on … Read entire article »

Finding The Meetings That Fit You

When I first entered recovery, I was able to go to a twelve-step meeting almost every night.  After a month, I moved to a Los Angeles- area sober living house, where they insisted that we attend one meeting every day for ninety days.  At first I felt this was impossible and unfair, but then I realized it was for our own good. After the first drug or drink that we take, addiction is not certain. Some will escape the clutches of drugs such as marijuana with only a superficial encounter. Others quickly fall into its grasp, abusing the powerful chemicals and quickly developing dependence. When I was 14 years-old and … Read entire article »

Prop 19 to Legalize Marijuana in California

Sitting in my dorm room in Burlington, Vermont my friends and I talked about the wonders and benefits of the legalization of marijuana. We talked about it for quite sometime. Looking up at the Bob Marley and Snoop Dogg posters on the wall, we imagined a country where we could sit and do just this all day. Thinking back to the moment I am now horrified that Marijuana may become legal in the state of California. How in the world will we progress as a country if we are given permission to sit and toke all day, talking about things we would like to accomplish? The emptiness and lack of motivation I got from pot was enough to send me to rehab. Although I recognize not everyone is an addict, pot … Read entire article »
