My Path to Sobriety and Gratefulness

  After being in rehab for over five months and achieving sobriety, I have finally turned my cell phone back on. However, my old friends and connections back home where I was involved in the drug scene were unaware of this. This is not to say I haven’t been in contact with my friends. I am the type of drug addict who compartmentalizes his addiction. I have some really good friends whom I will always stay in contact with no matter what. Thanking Recovering Addicts

  Actually spending time in a work environment with recovering addicts has given me a new type of freedom that I unexpectedly welcome.  Leaving a recovery treatment facility in the past has meant for me severing all ties with fellow sufferers of mental illness and drug addictions.  I simply did not want any association with those people with whom I identified.  Maybe it made looking in the mirror that much more difficult because I could no longer trick myself that I somehow was better than them or that my prognosis for having a healthy life was superior to their own demands.  It was a selfish notion in that fact that I was tying my sobriety and my self-worth by separating myself from the similar plight of fellow addicts.  At the time, … Read entire article »
