Fake Drug Checkpoints in Mayfield Heights Spark Controversy

In 2000, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that random checkpoints intended to check for drugs violated the Fourth Amendment (Associated Press). Police in the Mayfield Heights suburb of Cleveland, Ohio skirted around that ruling by setting up fake drug checkpoints along I-271, and despite the fact that the following searches resulted in some arrests and seizures, civil rights advocates and some members of the community are upset over this controversial tactic. The way that these fake drug checkpoints were set up seems specifically designed to trick motorists. Police put up signs along I-271 that warned motorists, “Drug Checkpoint Ahead,” and “Police K9 Dog in Use,” advising motorists to be prepared to stop (Peters). Instead, police proceeded to watch how people reacted to the signs and if they acted in a way … Read entire article »

Will Lower Legal Alcohol Limit Reduce Drunk Driving?

Will Lower Legal Alcohol Limit Reduce Drunk Driving?

In a move that may catch some drivers off guard in the near future, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommended this week that all 50 states should lower their legal driving under the influence (DUI) limits to 0.05 percent blood-alcohol content (BAC). This recommendation was among several made by the NTSB in effort to reduce alcohol-related crashes and the casualties associated with them. The lower limit would mean than less drinks containing alcohol could potentially … Read entire article »

Reese Witherspoon Arrested for Disorderly Conduct in Husband’s DUI Case

Last Friday, on April 19th, 2013, Reese Witherspoon, 37, was arrested for disorderly conduct in the wee hours of the morning after a state trooper said she wouldn’t stay in the car while her husband and well-known Hollywood agent, Jim Toth, 42, was given a field sobriety test. After observing Toth’s car wasn’t staying in its lane, State Trooper, First Class J. Pyland, initiated a traffic stop. He reported that Toth explained to him that he only had one drink that night but contradictorily had droopy eyelids, watery and bloodshot eyes, and his breath smelled strongly of alcohol. Before the field sobriety test began, Witherspoon got out of the car and was told to get back, an order that she obeyed, the report said. After the actress got out a second time, … Read entire article »

Funny Man Kevin Hart Isn’t Laughing Now After Arrested For DUI

Last Sunday, funny man Kevin Hart put himself in a not-so-funny predicament when he was pulled over after officers spotted the comedian/actor driving in a black Mercedes, weaving back and forth between lanes on the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles at around 4:30 AM.  When officers pursued him, he took an off-ramp and pulled over. According to California Highway Patrol officers, Hart was “driving erratic,” “going 90 MPH” and “almost collided with a gas tanker truck.” The CHP also said when they pulled him over, he showed “objective signs of intoxication” and was “unable to perform field sobriety tests.” After the arrest, Hart was booked into a local jail for misdemeanor DUI just before 6:00 AM and posted a $5,000 bond. Subsequent to being freed from jail, the always hilarious comedian posted a couple … Read entire article »

Are Boston Police Lagging in DUI Arrests or Just Getting Priorities Straight?

Are Boston Police Lagging in DUI Arrests or Just Getting Priorities Straight?

The city of Boston, MA made only 241 drunken driving arrests in 2012, far fewer than cities of similar size and a sharp decline from recent years. As a result, some Bostonians are beginning to inquire about the aggressiveness of its police force. In comparison, Denver has a slightly smaller population but made more than 3,000 drunken-driving arrests last year. That is more than ten times higher than Boston. Police in Charlotte, N.C. made nearly … Read entire article »

Bobby Brown Set Free After Less Than a Day in Jail

In recent news that could be taken from the headlines of any year from the past two decades, Bobby Brown has been released from jail after serving less than a day of a 55-day sentence handed down recently. Last year, Brown was convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and driving with a suspended license. It was Brown’s second DUI, so getting jail time was not unexpected. However, since he only ended up spending a mere nine house in the slammer, it seems he may be getting off easy. The release, which may seem premature to some, comes as the result of overcrowded jail conditions. Placing an inmate of house arrest essentially serves as a means to save money in operating costs and jail space. House arrest is not … Read entire article »

Rick Springfield Served Arrest Warrant for His Past DUI

Back in May of 2011, Rick Springfield was issued a DUI in Malibu after cops pulled him over in his 1963 Corvette Stingray.  At the time of the arrest, the rock star appeared to be intoxicated.  His run-in with the law was less than cordial.  Malibu police told sources that Rick threatened to kill the deputy who had arrested him, and the deputy’s family, if he had Rick’s car towed.  Now, almost two years after the incident, he is now facing consequences after he failed to show up for his court date to resolve the DUI matter. After Rick missed his court date this February, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.  A representative for the court explained the situation, “He was supposed to show proof he completed an alcohol … Read entire article »

Nix the Diet Mixers

Nix the Diet Mixers

People are constantly saying things along the lines of, “Oh, I need to cut a few calories out of my diet” before going to the bar or out for a party. Ask any young body conscious girl, and she’ll be quick to inform you that she’s aware that alcohol has tons of calories…but no worries – that’s why she’s mixing it with a diet drink.
