A group of scientists sponsored by Japan’s government recently found that a significant portion of Japanese youths are likely addicted to the Internet, which can cause health problems, including sleep disruptions and negative mental effects. A team of researchers, led by Professor Takashi Oida of Nihon University, distributed a survey to nearly 140,000 students across Japan to find out how they utilize the internet, and how it affects them. The Seoul Sucking Internet

Most people around the world, because of new advances in technology, are being fed media, constantly, from almost every angle, whether they like it or not.  In South Korea, its people relish the ability to practically attain universal internet access at speeds like no other, at shocking prices.  Such accessible internet like this has damaged many South Koreans’ lives allowing for the door to addiction to open up.  They can be described as “internet addicts.”  This addiction is so prevalent that the popular PBS show “Frontline” aired an episode showing South Korean children that had internet addiction, in rehab, trying to deter themselves from their unhealthy craving for the World Wide Web.  In one extreme case, a Korean couple left for the night to play online games at an internet … Read entire article »

Addicted to Fantasy

The first glimpse I had of my dad’s addictive behavior was when he got hooked on my very first Playstation game. Spyro was a 3-D adventure game that puts the gamer in control of a dragon seeking to restore his species from the evil tyrant, Gnasty Gnorb. Being 10 years old, I was drawn to the fantasy and excitement of the somewhat simple game. However, there would be times when I would arrive home from school only to see my dad beating a new level of the game. Although we were a Gnasty Gnorb defeating team, I became upset when he would play the game without me. 10 years later, I have knowledge of my dad’s drug addiction. Being a drug addict myself, I can see he wasn’t trying to take … Read entire article »

Addicted to Facebook

Facebook, a social networking site that was launched February 2004, has more than 500 million active users as of July 2010. The premise of Facebook stems from the book of photos freshman receive during university orientation from administrations to help students get to know each other better. I created my Facebook when I entered college, but it has not become common place for everybody to have one. Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with friends, share events, upload photos, and join networks organized by workplace, school, or college. However, for some, this activity can lead to addiction. Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD) has been labeled as a new mental health disorder by psychologists in the United States. Professor Dr. Mohamad Hussain Habil, director of Universiti Malaya Centre of … Read entire article »

When the word addiction is mentioned drugs come into mind more so than anything else. It is not true that addiction only comes in the form of drugs; sex, gambling, shopping, are all activities that people can become addicted to. A new addiction of the century comes with all the technological advances; the computer. According to a study, Lawrence Lam, PhD, of the University of Notre Dame in Australia, stated that teens that spend an excessive amount of time on the internet grow agitated when away from the computer and have less social interaction than those that spend a reasonable amount of time on the web. Teens that spend at least five hours a day on the internet are one and a half more times likely to become … Read entire article »
