Fewer States Uphold Commercial Host Liability Laws

  A new legal review study from the Alcohol Policy Consultations and Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that fewer states are adhering to commercial host liability policies. Higher Alcohol Tax Could Save Lives

A higher tax on alcohol would avoid 600 to 800 deaths a year, just in Florida, due to diseases cause by immense amounts of drinking. Mildred M. Maldonado-Molina, and Alexander C. Wagenaar, of the Department of Epidemiology and Health Policy Research, University of Florida, College of Medicine, Gainesville preformed a study that examined the relation of the death rate and tax data from 1969 to 2004. Studies done in the past have proven that an increase in taxes on alcohol decreases the use and abuse of alcohol. This recent study confirmed that an increase on alcohol taxes would also effect alcohol related deaths including; cirrhosis of the liver, pancreatitis, gastric diseases, some cancers, and cardiovascular diseases.
