Remaining Anonymous in AA

As a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, anonymity is often a very pressing issue and topic of controversy. It is one of those grey areas of the program open to dispute. The 11th and 12th traditions both deal in the subject.  At the group level, I find that it keeps the common good of the organization as top priority: “… ever reminding us to place principles before personalities”. Not one person takes precedence over another. We are all equals.  Our careers, financial well-being, social status, our time sober, our race, religion, or creed: none of these issues should be taken into consideration at any meeting.  Not only that, but, if one is of high social stature, their word may be given a higher value by another. Also, the program is to … Read entire article »

Exercising Moderation with Caffeine

Exercising Moderation with Caffeine

One of the things that moved me, besides the bravery of the speakers and the friendliness of the people, when I first went to AA meetings was that there was coffee and cake. I must admit I am always impressed and overjoyed by hospitality and like sharing a nosh with people. There is magic in having a simple cup of tea with someone. Coffee, tea and chocolate all contain caffeine. This can be an amazing … Read entire article »

Service Without Expectation

Service Without Expectation

In my free time I enjoy trolling 3-4 drug forums. This is a habit I have carried over from my active addiction into recovery. Before the hairs on the back of your neck begin to rise, let me promise you; I spend more than a majority of my time browsing the recovery sub-forums. I never really noticed these sections prior to getting clean. Funny. Anyways, I was reading around and I came across a story … Read entire article »

The Insatiable Thirst of Ego

I am a genius. I am better than you. I can do no wrong. I am more attractive than James Franco. Are any of these statements true? Well, except for perhaps the James Franco one, I highly doubt any of my friends believe that those paint an accurate depiction of me. To my ego though, all of the points listed above can never be disputed. I know deep within my heart that I am no more special than any other person on this planet, yet I still find myself talking down to others. Ironically, the more I hate myself, the more elitist I become. I am the piece of shit in the center of the universe. I heard that in a meeting a few weeks ago, and it immediately clicked. I … Read entire article »

Still Sober on Psychiatric Medication

Still Sober on Psychiatric Medication

Over half of the alcoholics in the United States also suffer from some kind of co-occurring mental disorder.[1] The decision to take psychiatric medication to treat these issues is often a topic of debate within the rooms of A.A. Some suggest one should not ingest any mind altering drug while recovering from alcoholism while others tout this option as a tool of great benefit to the newly sober. Those that object to the use of … Read entire article »

Young People’s Sobriety in LA

Young People’s Sobriety in LA

I am originally from the East Coast and this is where I was first introduced to Alcoholics Anonymous. I recently moved to Los Angeles and have been sober my entire time here. Maintaining sobriety was difficult for me back East. Many factors played a part in why I couldn’t get a grasp of this program back East. My view of Alcoholics Anonymous changed when I got to Los Angeles and the … Read entire article »

Locked Up But Not Loaded: Sober Inside The Lynwood Correctional Facility

Locked Up But Not Loaded: Sober Inside The Lynwood Correctional Facility

A couple of years ago, on a steady diet of booze and sedatives, waking up in my car with pee all over me and the seat, I would have laughed in disbelief at the thought that one day I would have to clean up the wreckage of my alcohol and drug abuse. I choose drugs over everything and everybody. I was reckless. The scariest part came when I unconsciously chose drugs over life itself, … Read entire article »
