Mindy McCready’s Death Brings Celebrity Rehab Under Fire
Country singer and troubled addict Mindy McCready shot herself this February, becoming the fifth Celebrity Rehab client in the past two years to die. Although addiction and mental illness can be fatal if left untreated, many people are pointing fingers at Dr. Drew Pinsky and Celebrity Rehab. I won’t say he and his show are directly responsible for her or any other death, but their practices are reckless and detrimental to those they are supposedly … Read entire article »

Celebrity Rehab: The Curse of Addiction
The recent suicide of country singer Mindy McCready is shining a dark spotlight on the VH1 reality series Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. McCready became the fifth celebrity cast member out of the 39 who have appeared on the show to die. Her death reignited debate about and criticism of the show and its value to the recovery process. Many see the show as exploitative of people in recovery and turning their addictions into mindless entertainment. It’s difficult to argue with those criticisms, though the show’s value in portraying the horrors of drug and alcohol dependency and helping its participants overcome their addictions is more debatable. Whether Celebrity Rehab has redeeming qualities and serves as a vehicle to educate its viewers or is simply an exercise in mass media exploitation, it hardly … Read entire article »

Actress and comedienne Kristen Johnston, best known for her roles on the television shows Third Rock from the Sun and The Exes, has written a book titled Guts: The Endless Follies and Tiny Triumphs of a Tiny Disaster. The brutally candid memoir recounts her exploits with prescription drugs and alcohol, which began in her teens, as well as her career and five-year battle with depression. Toward the end of her active addiction she even landed in the hospital with acute peritonitis, an inflammation of the peritoneum, the thin tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen and covers most of the abdominal organs. At the time, she was in the midst of a career comeback, headlining in the West End production of Love Song. The actress recalls, “Opening night, and … Read entire article »

On the night ofMarch 3,1991, a bystander recorded a video of Los Angeles Police Department officers beating a desperate and helpless African-American man, Rodney King on the ground with batons while other surrounding officers watched, not doing a thing to try to stop this horrid violence being carried out by their fellows. CELEBRITIZING ADDICTION
‘Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew’ first aired on VH1 in 2008. The program follows overdramatic celebrities during their stay in the Pasadena Recovery Center, Dr. Drew Pinsky’s rehab facility. The popular show has spawned two spin-offs: ‘Celebrity Rehab Presents Sober House’ and ‘Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew Pinsky’. Pinsky is also the host of the syndicated radio program ‘Loveline,’ offering relationship tips to callers across North America. Pinsky is a board certified physician, boasting an addiction medicine specialty. The credibility of Pinsky’s show relies exclusively on his medical license; in truth, the show is purely an exercise in voyeurism. The life or death struggle of B to F-list stars mimics a high-stakes poker game. The audience cannot expect most of these patients to maintain long-term sobriety, and we may quietly … Read entire article »

Has the Media Caused Societies View on Alcoholism to Change?
Recently the Los Angeles Times posted an article explaining that alcoholism has increased in the last 60 years. The article says that people in North America born after World War II are more prone to have drinking problems. While the numbers may prove this point, could it also be a result of America’s more modern acceptance of addiction? Alcohol has been beloved as a spiritual, medicinal and social lubricant for centuries. Many of our favorite … Read entire article »

Actor Chris Klein Accepts Responsibility for his Actions
The actor, Chris Klein, pleads no contest to a DUI charge on Friday. This charge was involved with his June 16th arrest on the 101 Freeway. We all know Chris is famous for his appearance on “American Pie”, but his ability to cope with the court system is what catches the media’s attention. Chris stated to the judge,“ I apologize for my wrongdoing and I really appreciate that the court gave me the opportunity to prove how seriously I took all of this.” To me, this statement means a lot, a celebrity being able to realize his actions and take responsibility for them, is definitely surprising in today’s media. He has served four days in jail already but he is on four years of probation and 18 months in an alcohol … Read entire article »
