Do You Believe in Magic? What About God?
Me and my band mate Ashleigh find ourselves at McDonalds. We always find ourselves at McDonalds though. She just found me a kitten.
Flashback Three days prior. I wake up at noon like the majority of the week when I don’t wake up at 7am and I text her “I want a kitten, and I want to name her Noelle.” I ask her if she will go to the pound with me she says yes. And then she calls me back three minutes later from a rehab we both went to, where we still visit often. “They found a kitten during Torah Study in the women’s lounge.” The irony at this point hurts me. I decide to see her and take her in, resulting in belly aching anxiety, although I have a beta fish I have kept alive for two years, this is different. This is a kitten.
Back to the McDonalds parking lot. We walk into McDonalds with my Noelle bundled up in her baby blanket and we were told in a thick Spanish accent “no pets allowed nor do we have carbonated sodas currently.” So disappointed on so many levels we take our sweet tea and kitten outside with our number 3, and we place Noelle in the backseat of the car with the windows down on our side as we sit on the sidewalk. I continue to ask if I should feel dirty for sitting on the sidewalk. She says no but at the same time she is sitting on the ledge. We talk about if it is rude if a person parks in the open spot we are sitting in front of. We decided it would be, but it wouldn’t be if there are no parking spaces left. Then we discuss well if it were two attractive men who park there and decide to make conversation and eat McDonalds with us on the ground, that would be acceptable. We really got into it. A girl around our age comes up to us asking if we could charge her phone in my car, because she is lost and an address in her dead battery phone, I of course agree.
I plug her phone into my car and look for Noelle to show her. I look under the seats, my purse, blankets. “Ashleigh I can’t find our cat.”
“Of course you can she is in there.” ”No, I really don’t think she is.”
Noelle is nowhere to be seen. Panic mode. Ashleigh strategically takes everything out of the car. I stand with my eyes over my gaped mouth for ten minutes feet planted to the cement. Two hours later I come up with a plan to get food put it all over the inside of my car (at this point my backseat is completely out of my car on top of the roof.) and lock myself in the car and I finally hear her purring. She is under my steering wheel in this little nook just sleeping! I was so elated. My friend isn’t mad at me anymore for becoming Satan and freaking out and yelling at everyone and praying. Thirty seconds later she laughs and says “see now it is funny”.
We put everything back inside my car, and now my car is clean!
Then I find something under my car, it’s a piece of paper with my handwriting. My sponsor told me to write down my definition of a higher power 8 months ago and she said when I need it it will show up. And underneath my car was my definition of a higher power I had not seen in 8 months. I now call Noelle my little bundle of God. For the first time in a long time I have a comforting sense that something bigger than myself is looking out for me in a positive way. I guess I always knew it yet this tangible evidence gave me chills and a huge sense of safety. Just, wow. Just.
