Rihanna to Enter Sex and Love Addiction Treatment Program

The relationship between Rihanna and Chris Brown has been making headlines since 2009, when Brown violently assaulted the ‘Diamonds’ singer. In recent years, the couple have reunited… and most recently, split again. This relationship has reportedly caused the singer enough stress and anxiety to check into a treatment center for Sex and Love Addiction at The Ranch clinic in Tennessee. This program follows the model of a traditional substance abuse rehab, and also includes the 12-step SLAA program.

In 2009, Rihanna was brutally beaten by Chris Brown after an altercation. From this point on, her relationship with Brown was ground for public speculation. Rihanna got a restraining order against Brown, but it was rescinded in 2011 (US Weekly). In January 2013, the 2 singers were officially a couple again (TV3). The relationship then took another turn when Chris Brown rekindled his romance with his ex, Karrueche Tran (TV3). Supposedly, this has been causing so much trouble for the 25-year-old pop star that a psychotherapist recommended she attend the 12-step program based at The Ranch.

The program that Rihanna would be entering is called the Women’s Love and Sex Addiction Treatment Program. It’s designed to help women who attract abusive, troubled, addicted, or unavailable partners (Victorian). The treatment includes counseling and equine therapy, and is modeled after conventional substance abuse clinics (Brown). It also involves 12-step programs, such as SLAA (Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous); which provide a structure and support outside of the treatment facility itself. Hopefully, Rihanna can find the help and support she needs after the end of this publicly toxic relationship.

Any addiction, especially one like sex or love addiction, is easily misconstrued and judged when someone is in the public eye. Sex and love addictions aren’t viewed by many as ‘real’ addictions, but the fact of the matter is that these self-destructive behaviors can cause just as much internal and external damage as a drug habit can. It’s inspiring to see a woman like Rihanna, who’s been through a lot in her relationship with Chris Brown, take charge of her life, reach out for help, and set an example for people who are struggling with similar situations.

The public may never know what really happened between Chris Brown and Rihanna during their turbulent relationship. All her fans can do is hope that she gets the best treatment she can possibly get, and believe that these methods and the support provided by SLAA will work for her to move on from this destructive and painful relationship. All I know for certain is that if she does go into this treatment center, she’s setting an amazing example, and once again, showing that she is a strong, real person with real life issues – and that no one, despite money, power, or fame, can handle everything by themselves.
