DBT
Dialectical Behavior Therapy, an outgrowth of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, was developed by psychologist Marsha Linehan of the University of Washington in the 1970’s and 1980’s to treat suicidal behaviors, often emanating from Borderline Personality Disorder. It was later expanded to treat depression, Bipolar Disorder, and other mental disorders involving severe emotional dysregulation. Symptoms commonly treated by DBT clinicians include neediness, self-harm, co-dependency, suicidal impulses, impulsiveness, mood swings, identity disturbance, unstable interpersonal relationships, self-mutilation, dissociation, and uncontrolled rage. 27 Club
The 27 Club is a very exclusive but not limiting club. I had not heard of this club/theory until asked to write about it. After doing some research it is a very fascinating topic. The 27 Club is a theory that at the age of 27 musicians would die due to their addiction problems. There are 40+ musicians who had all died at the age of 27 due to their continue drug abuse. Kurt Cubain, Amy … Read entire article »
Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston’s death was for some people a shock and for others a sigh of relief. Whitney had been battling addiction problems for many years. I have always wondered why someone who seems to have everything and has a bank account that was bottomless would destroy it with drugs. If you had ever tuned in to Bravo a few years back you would most likely remember the show “Being Bobby Brown”. “Being Bobby Brown” documented the daily lives of both Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston. The show came at a price to Whitney’s image. We witnessed how she really felt about different races of people and saw how bad her addiction was getting. Why as a society do we hold different celebrities to different standards when it comes to addiction? Take for example … Read entire article »
Rx
Adderall, Xanax, Vicodin, Ativan, Ritalin, Phenobarbital. All prescription drugs I have had the distinctive pleasure of abusing. This means I have manipulated (psychiatrists), stolen (from ailing Grandma), blacked out (for days on end), and crawled through withdrawal (suicidal ideation, property destruction); pleasurable, huh? I was introduced to prescription drugs at age 8; first SSRIs to combat OCD, then stimulants to push through ADD, then benzodiazepines to ease acute anxiety. I abused my Xanax and Adderall … Read entire article »

Mindfulness and Mood Disorders

Mindfulness is a concept which stems from Buddhism, but has been widely adapted by Western psychology. Mindfulness can be described as an awareness of the present moment; the practice of cultivating awareness of the body, breath, and mind with the intention of being completely present, moment-to-moment. The goal is to be able to experience and observe emotions and sensations … Read entire article »

The Importance of Doing
Good intentions are wonderful. They’re very important. But, as human beings, we are measured by our actions. Who we are is measured by our actions. Actions are visible and discernible behavior—and while it may be frustrating that people often can’t see all the hard work we are doing internally, our actions are the only thing they can quantify. Also, action implies movement. Intention can point us in the right direction, and lay a foundation for … Read entire article »
The Demon worshipping AA cult
Once I hit rock bottom in my addiction and had a near-death experience, I thought I was ready for any kind of assistance with my recovery. At rehab, I was told to attend 12-step meetings. I had never heard of Alcoholics Anonymous, and I was very skeptical about the program. As I learned more about it, the concept of a Higher Power and surrendering my life to sobriety seemed out of the question. I was … Read entire article »

Drugs In Boarding School
High school, how I miss those days when responsibility was little and life seemed so easy, when drugs were still fun and actually worked, and when every experience was always fresh and new. High school was an amazing experience for me. The school that I went to was private and was half boarding students and half day students. We had students from all over the world and different walks of life. I was a day … Read entire article »
