Kombucha? Cough Syrup? Is This Okay in Sobriety?

While in rehab, the staff prevented us having any cosmetic products containing alcohol such as mouthwash or perfume. Our belongings were searched upon arrival and all approved prescription medications were held at the nurse’s office to be doled out as prescribed. Alcoholics will find all sorts of creative ways to get high and treatment centers must take precautions to prevent slips from inside the facility. Young in Sobriety

It was clear that by freshman and sophomore year my drinking and drug use had become problematic. I grew up in New York City – fake ids, clubs, alcohol and endless drugs surrounded me. Everyone wanted to party and everyone did. Starting when I was twelve-years-old, I drank and used drugs on a regular basis. My grade kicked off our first day of high school with a giant party where one girl got alcohol poisoning … Read entire article »

Body Image Issues in Sobriety

Body Image Issues in Sobriety

I entered rehab in the summer of 2006. I was 20 years old and 20 pounds underweight. To me, I looked fabulous. I adored the way my hip bones jut out of the tops of my shorts and how my protruding spine scaled up my back like a xylophone. I didn’t have an eating disorder – I had alcoholism, and these were some of the physical symptoms. I was a daily cocaine user and a … Read entire article »

New Nike Advertisement Uses The Concept of Addiction to Inspire Shoe Sales

In a new advertisement circulating the web, Nike compares the desperation associated with chemical dependency to the discipline of exercise and its rewards of emotional transcendence and physical endurance. The artsy, black-and-white video starts out welcoming the viewer to the world of addiction, qualifying it as “the only addiction that is good for your body.” According to the narrator of the video, the Nike addiction, like that to drugs and alcohol, starts slowly, with the “addict” believing that he or she can stop whenever they want to. Nike describes its “addiction” as a “physical and chemical addiction to sweat, endorphins, and lactic acid.” The narrator declares that, in this addiction, “your body changes and your mind transforms,” typical physical and physiological hallmarks of true addiction to drugs and alcohol. Drug Testing for Welfare Recipients

Starting July 1, The Department of Children and Family Services in the state of Florida required a drug screening for welfare recipients. Are You There GOD? It’s Me, An Alcoholic

When we come to Alcoholics Anonymous, we are encouraged to take the faith we put in our drugs and old behaviors and place it in a higher power of our understanding. Some of us call this power “God”. Drenched in religious and spiritual dogma, we often find the concept of God, and indeed the word itself, difficult to incorporate into our recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism, but once the fog of addiction has lifted … Read entire article »

Sex and Sobriety: Sex With a Using Addict?

Sex and Sobriety: Sex With a Using Addict?

Tom and I had been working together for a month when I took interest in him as more than a coworker. We shared a similar sense of humor and always had fun secretly flirting in the office. Being sober, I missed the excitement of sneaking around and doing things I wasn’t supposed to. An office scandal with Tom seemed to be the perfect, sober way of getting into a little trouble. Tom, also sober, … Read entire article »
