More & More Women Drinking During Pregnancy

Drinking around children when they are young is a big NO-NO in the parenting world but now, women are drinking while they are in their first trimester of pregnancy. Believe it or not, a woman named Donna is drinking wine while she is pregnant and says that her therapists recommend this. WHAT!?

“My therapist recommends wine [for stress],” she says. Cheerfully Donna exclaims, “I’ve had two glasses in the last nine days.”

The debate here is strong and both sides have good facts to back them up.

Some moms are totally against the fact that drinking a very small amount of wine is sick and disturbing. “Drinking can only lead to more and more drinking, causing the baby inside to suffer from the alcohol affects as well”, states a worried mom. Also, a website called UrbanBaby includes information on pregnancy, specifically different solutions to enjoy things considered “taboo” to enjoy while undergoing pregnancy. People on this side of the argument believe women restricting themselves to certain things is just living in fear 9 times out of 10.

On the other note….

There are the moms that do think it is ridiculous to even think that while you are pregnant you can’t enjoy a glass of wine “every once and a while”. This is where I stand on the continuum. If I were a woman and pregnant, then a glass of wine once a month, would not harm my unborn child.

“The truth is, if you look at who’s born with fetal alcohol syndrome, their mothers were alcoholics — not babies with mothers who had one drink a week,” says Dr. Randi Hutter Epstein.

That is exactly right, Doc. The problem generally occurs when a woman decides to exceed the amount of alcohol consumption considered acceptable in a given week. If consumption is not controlled then the unborn child will more likely suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome. My viewpoint on the subject is: drinking a glass of wine once or twice a month, after a month of being pregnant with zero drinking, will not harm the fetus.
