Sober and Bored?

When I was new in sobriety I was bored. Dangerously bored. I had no idea what to do with myself now that I was sober. When weekends would roll around I would be deathly bored. I remember the first few months in rehab a few of my buddies had a brilliant idea. “It’s Saturday night… let’s do something crazy!” Well, the best we could come up was buy extra large Monster energy drinks and… I don’t know… have a lot of energy? Look, I was bored and new in sobriety, don’t judge! So there we are outside the Albertsons parking lot with enough extra large Monster’s for people to think we were part of the energy drink street team. We each chugged 3 of those Monster’s. There was a brief 5-10 minutes of energy, followed by a lot of vomiting. The point of this story is… don’t chug energy drinks, it’s really not that fun.

It’s common for people to be terribly bored in sobriety, especially when you are young. Here are some ideas I’ve heard people say to try to have fun while in rehab: Want to toilet paper someone’s house? Should we watch Dante’s Peak tonight? Want to watch Lord of the Rings on mute and come up with our own dialogue? Want to punch me in the face? None of those things sound fun, which is how you know people must be bored while saying them.

I wish I could come up with a list of 10 awesome things to do in sobriety, but I’ve read lists like that before and I’d rather let a small mouse eat my eyeballs out then do any of the suggestions people give. My best advice is to find a crew of friends that you have fun with no matter what you’re doing. The fun will follow, I promise.  Also, I don’t believe in this quote, “only boring people are bored.” It’s a cliché quote that people say because everyone gets bored when they first get sober and the people they ask for advice from just don’t want to talk about it anymore so they swing out a quote. The key is: find friends that are fun. That’s the key with anything you do. It’s important to know that when you first get sober, you will be bored, but it will change over time. Just don’t try to force fun while your detoxing from heroin because it just doesn’t work. Remember… only boring people are bored! Psh!!
