What about the Kids!!

A study examined over 800 kids, ages 10 to 24, to compare the influence of delinquency behavior in late childhood development between low and middle income families. The study found that financial status does play a role in delinquency problems: crime, alcohol use disorders and risky sex behaviors; and an early intervention for an adolescent may help avoid such problems.

Teens that came from a low income background were two times more likely to participate in early sexual activities; age 11, and more likely to contribute to early delinquency; age 10, than those that came from a middle class background. On the other hand, middle class youth were 1.5 times more likely to get into alcohol use; age 10, than the youth from lower-income backgrounds.

Due to early participation in aforementioned activities by children, an increase of ongoing behaviors increased in young adulthood.

The results of this study can help the advancement of interventions that are designed to help children avoid behaviors from progressing any further.

This study further indicated the affects society has on us as we grow up. Our developmental state from age 6 on is highly influenced by our surroundings. Before venturing out into the world we learn for the people who raise us. Our actions and reactions are learned from our guardians. Once we go to school, we get confused because everyone is raised differently and we automatically learn to conform to our peers; our morals, attitudes and actions all change in order to get the love and acceptance we thrive on to survive.

Society transforms us and we are reflections upon where we come from. It isn’t necessarily a conscious decision but more of an act of being loved and accepted. It is how generations change; we push aside our learned skills from our parents to our peer’s behavior which mixes things up.
