The War on Drugs Unfairly Targets Minorities

The War on Drugs Unfairly Targets Minorities

It is not an uncommon belief that America’s War on Drugs has failed. The United States has the highest incarceration rate by far of any country in the industrialized world. More than half of federal arrests are for drug charges, and 4 in 5 of those arrests were for mere possession, not distribution (Zakaria). When President Nixon enacted stronger anti-drug policies which started what is known as the U.S. “War on Drugs,” the policies “aimed at eliminating … Read entire article »

Mexican Cartels Recruit Children

The international tension surrounding the drug cartels in Mexico isn’t anything new – and neither are their tactics. Recruiting American and South American children alike, these murderous criminal enterprises brainwash impressionable youth and have them carry out heinous acts of violence – all for a bigger profit. By using children, these cartels are doing what street gangs have been doing for a long time: giving kids who feel like they have no place in the world a home, and a supposed family. Therein lies the problem: these kids are fed a false sense of loyalty and belonging when they are truly being used as expendable killers, drug dealers, and distractions. Cartels do not discriminate when it comes to luring youth into their webs. Many of these children come from broken homes, where … Read entire article »

The pictures were widespread over the internet and discovered by all of her classmates, who responded by ridiculing and demoralizing her. The bullying wasn’t … Read entire article »

Pills that Sober You Up

Ever been so drunk and wishing to sober up ?  Well, no need to go on a spree to find uppers once this new “sober pill” comes out. A team of researchers led by UCLA bimolecular engineer, Yunfeng Lu, and USC biochemist, Cheng Ji, have packaged enzymes inside a nontoxic, nanoscale polymer shell that mimic the body’s natural alcohol-processing activities.  The biomimetic enzyme nanocomplexes have been shown to quickly and dramatically reduce blood alcohol levels in intoxicated mice, and they show promise as antidotes and preventive measures for alcohol intoxication.  The researchers say, “We show that nanocomplexes containing alcohol oxidase and catalase could reduce blood alcohol levels in intoxicated mice, offering an alternative antidote and prophylactic for alcohol intoxication.” The researchers reduced blood alcohol levels in intoxicated mice by injecting them with … Read entire article »

Flushed Drugs Getting Fish High

Flushed Drugs Getting Fish High

Imagine fish, aggressively swimming, and hyper, anti-social-even getting the munchies. It sounds comical, almost made up; unfortunately, it’s not. This is the all too real effect of pharmaceutical waste that ends up in the water, effectively getting fish high and removing the natural balance of wildlife society in the same way that drugs remove the natural balance of human society. These drugs, particularly an anti-anxiety medication called Oxazepam, gets into the water multiple ways but … Read entire article »

Exposure to Conflict of Interest Polices has a Powerful Effect on Psychiatrists

In a first of its kind study, researchers have found that psychiatrists who are exposed to conflict-of-interest (COI) policies regarding pharmaceutical companies during residency training are significantly less likely to prescribe brand-name antidepressants to their patients than those whose residencies did not include such policies. The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, Yale School of Public Health, Harvard Medical School and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, involved the analysis of prescriptions written in 2009 by the 1,652 psychiatrists who participated in 162 different residency programs. The data was obtained from IMS (Intercontinental Medical Statistics) Health, a company that provides information, services, and technology to the healthcare industry. Nearly half of the participants in the study completed their residencies in 2001, before conflict-of-interest training policies had been adopted. … Read entire article »

Medbox Wants to Install Medical Marijuana Vending Machines

It seems like Medbox, a California based company is in the business to make all the adult stoners in Colorado and Washington State happy. Their ultimate goal is to use a vending machine style method of sales distribution, which would require a fingerprint scan linked to a patient’s prescription for marijuana and dispense their desired strain. Would that be a business savvy idea? Yes. Would it be a moral and feasible concept to actually carry out? No. For one, from what I’ve found, the majority of people who do drugs don’t care whether or not it’s legal; never mind whether or not they can get it from a vending machine. So, as to the topic on marijuana vending machines helping to eliminate the illegal drug trade, I believe that is a … Read entire article »

Your Next Pain Killer Could Be Bugged

Your Next Pain Killer Could Be Bugged

At the 2013 Clinton Health Matters Conference in La Quinta on Tuesday, New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, publicized a new tactic to attempt to discontinue the spread of pharmaceutical prescription drug related crime – arming medicine bottles with GPS tracking devices. The traceable “bait bottle” is planned to be dispensed among different pharmacies containing fake pain-killers in the hopes of battling the plague of pharmacy robberies by sellers and addicts looking for oxycodone pills.  This … Read entire article »
