Words To Live By

Words To Live By

I use many different tools in my recovery. AA and the 12 steps is a big part of all of it; however, I am open to any method that will help me better myself. I am working on becoming a better man every day and that requires much work. I have been looking towards the advice of other men who I can admire. One of those men is Benjamin Franklin and his 13 virtues. Benjamin … Read entire article »

Entitlement

Entitlement

“But Mommmmm!” … Living in a rehab with 160 people I have become acquainted with the worst vice a recovering addict could have: entitlement. I have witnessed kids come in and out with entitlement issues that would make Paris Hilton shiver. Kids (and usually this entitlement belongs to kids) think that because they got sober after years of running amuck that the world owes them a diamond studded chariot covered in puppies and candy bars. … Read entire article »

Holistic Medicine: Truly Healthy or Latest Fad?

Holistic Medicine: Truly Healthy or Latest Fad?

A survey of new techniques in treatment of alcoholism and addiction inevitably leads to the emergence of holistic medicine as a complementary approach for a variety of programs.  From drug- court mandated acupuncture, to a staff naturopath at many higher end rehabs, the presence of holistic medicine comes in many forms and serves many functions.  In what ways (and at what cost) are these alternative treatments proving effective? Acupuncture:  Perhaps the most widespread form of alt. … Read entire article »

My Psychotic Debauchery with Bath Salts

My name is Brian and I am blogging about my experiences with the recent legal designer drug known as “Bath Salts.” Although they may sound harmless, this is hardly the case. There are not even traces of sodium in the white gram-sized powders sold at smoke shops nation-wide. They are snorted like cocaine or methamphetamine and have similar mimicking affects. I first tried this drug in January of 2010. It was in the form of relapse from gateway drugs I used in the past. I knew it was sold at a smoke shop by my parents’ house, so one day, off I went. When I bought the vial of bath salts named ‘White Lightening,” the store employee also gave me a Slurpee straw with an end shaped like a small spoon … Read entire article »

Was Bill W. Drugged into His Spiritual Awakening?

Every member of Alcoholics Anonymous and the various other 12 Step Programs have heard of the co-founder William Griffith Wilson, better known as Bill Wilson or Bill W. Through reading the ‘Big Book,’ we hear many stories from alcoholics, Bill Wilson included, being the primary author of the book originally titled ‘Alcoholics Anonymous’ in 1938. From then the program has taken on the name of this book and has expanded to millions of members across the globe. Not many people know of the story of how and why Bill Wilson got sober through his spiritual awakening. In 1901 Charles B. Towns opened a hospital in New York on 293 Central Park West with partner Dr. Alexander Lambert. Charles Towns was not licensed to practice medicine and on October 1909 together they … Read entire article »

Social Drug Use to Full Blown Addict

Never in a lifetime did I think I would be sticking a needle in my arm. When I thought of an IV drug user it disgusted me. I related it to being homeless, broke and having all kinds of diseases. My Aunt was an IV drug user with hepatitis C and her boyfriend died of a heroin overdose when I was younger. I remember telling myself that will never be me. NEVER! I was a high honors student who got straight A’s in school and played football, baseball and hockey. I had lots of friendsnone of which used drugs. That was untilone of my friends had, what I thought was a genius idea, at the time. His idea was to try smoking pot. At this time I was only in 7th … Read entire article »

Sober and Home for the First Time Since Rehab

Sober and Home for the First Time Since Rehab

Recently I just made a trip back home to see my family in London for the first time in six months. For the last six months I had been in some form of an addiction treatment center, either in primary care, secondary care or sober living. I had seen my parents in that time at family programs but under the supervision and monitoring of the clinical staff running those programs. This trip was, therefore, my … Read entire article »
