Sleep Deprivation may Lead to Mental Illness

The phrase, “We can sleep when we’re dead!”, is a phrase that is being thrown around all the time by teenagers. As much as teens and young adults may want to believe that they can function properly without sleep, new studies are showing that being sleep-deprived may lead to mental illness. You might ask yourself, what exactly constitutes sleep deprivation? People who sleep less than five hours fall within a high-risk category for sleep deprivation and a higher probability of becoming mentally ill. Clinically speaking, people who rest for eight to nine hours per night are considered to have normal sleeping patterns. One of the things keeping people from getting the recommended rest is modern technology. Young adults between the ages of 17 and 24 are becoming more and more distracted by … Read entire article »

Marijuana Is Not a Gateway Drug – Really?

Most of us have sat through D.A.R.E. classes in elementary school or a variation of drug awareness programs over the years. Grandparents, teachers, mentors and the like have wagged their fingers and said “You know not to smoke pot! If someone offers you a hit, say no. It’s a gateway drug to other drugs.” According to new research published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, this may not necessarily be factual. I have to say that I wouldn’t call up your old middle school health teacher with a snide remark just yet. The study was conducted based on 1,300 Hispanic, white and African-American young adults who attended south Florida public schools between 1990 and 2000. Van Gundy co-researched the group of students with Cesar J. Rebellon from the time … Read entire article »

More & More Women Drinking During Pregnancy

Drinking around children when they are young is a big NO-NO in the parenting world but now, women are drinking while they are in their first trimester of pregnancy. Believe it or not, a woman named Donna is drinking wine while she is pregnant and says that her therapists recommend this. WHAT!? “My therapist recommends wine [for stress],” she says. Cheerfully Donna exclaims, “I’ve had two glasses in the last nine days.” The debate here is strong and both sides have good facts to back them up. Some moms are totally against the fact that drinking a very small amount of wine is sick and disturbing. “Drinking can only lead to more and more drinking, causing the baby inside to suffer from the alcohol affects as well”, states a worried mom. Also, a … Read entire article »

The Mystery of Beer Goggles

So we’ve all heard of beer goggles, the phenomenon when alcohol makes someone who may not be attractive appear beautiful. I think I can assume that pretty much everyone, or at least any alcoholic, can say that they have been the victim of beer goggles. Alcohol reduces our inhibitions, dulling our ability to make clear choices. Along with this, it distorts our ability to recognize asymmetrical faces. It has been established in previous research that those with symmetrical faces are preferred and found more attractive. To find if alcohol actually interferes with the ability to distinguish faces, Lewis Halset of Roehampton University in London and his colleagues designed an experiment involving images of faces that were tinkered with to make them perfectly symmetrical or subtly asymmetrical. The participants were university student … Read entire article »

Beer Can Cause Skin Disease

Well ladies there are more benefits to light beer than just saving you some calories. Dr. Abrar A. Qureshi from Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, conducted a study with more than 1,000 women with cases of psoriasis from ages 27 to 44. Women who average at least 2.3 alcoholic beverages are 72% more likely in developing this skin condition. They type of alcohol that was consumed was also looked at. Light beer, red and white wine, and other forms of liquor had no affect on the number of cases. Regular beer was the beverage that was associated with the skin condition. This finding suggests that a nonalcoholic element in regular beer and not light beer, red and white wine and other liquors could … Read entire article »

What about the Kids!!

A study examined over 800 kids, ages 10 to 24, to compare the influence of delinquency behavior in late childhood development between low and middle income families. The study found that financial status does play a role in delinquency problems: crime, alcohol use disorders and risky sex behaviors; and an early intervention for an adolescent may help avoid such problems. Teens that came from a low income background were two times more likely to participate in early sexual activities; age 11, and more likely to contribute to early delinquency; age 10, than those that came from a middle class background. On the other hand, middle class youth were 1.5 times more likely to get into alcohol use; age 10, than the youth from lower-income backgrounds. Due to early participation in aforementioned … Read entire article »

Alcohol Being Advertised in Kids Magazines

According to a new study, young Americans’ exposure to alcohol ads in magazines declined 48% between 2001 and 2008. An analysis of magazine ads found that 325 alcohol brands advertised in 2008. 16 of the brands accounted for half the ads placed in publications that were more likely to be seen by teens than adults. Magazines serve as a major source of advertising for alcohol companies. In 2008 it was found that 78% of alcohol advertisements occurred in publications more likely to be read by people ages from 12-20 than by those who are 21 or older. David H. Jernijan, director of the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY), is outraged that alcohol companies continue to target those who cannot legally dink. Jernijan believes there should be stricter standards to … Read entire article »

Bullying in School Causes Teen Girl to Develop Anorexia

Bullying in school has become an increasingly big problem across the country. A concerned mother filed a lawsuit against the Pittsburgh, P.A. Schools last August. This lawsuit was in behalf of her 15 year old daughter, who developed the eating disorder anorexia as a result of bullying. The bullying went on when she was in 6th and 7th grade and was non-stop. The harassment included comments about her weight and calling her fat. Her mother noticed something horribly wrong and then entered her daughter into an inpatient treatment program. Bullying is a common theme found in any school but when it comes down to the intense verbal and physical abuse as witnessed in this case the school really needs to take action. From my opinion, school employees don’t worry too much … Read entire article »

Adults to be Held Accountable for Underage Drinkers

Well parents of California, looks as if the “you live in my house, you follow my rules,” saying will be holding even more value than you thought. On Monday a 67-1 Assembly vote approved the legislation that holds parents accountable for the activities that are held under their roof. Adults that provide alcohol to underage kids at social gatherings are to be liable if a minor is injured or killed due to drinking. The legislation is being sent to the governor’s deck to be passed. California would not be the first state to enforce potential “social host” legal responsibility on adults who knowingly serve alcohol to minors in their home. In this law alcohol would have to be the main cause of injury. The law applies to adults in the … Read entire article »

Locked Up But Not Loaded: Sober Inside The Lynwood Correctional Facility

A couple of years ago, on a steady diet of booze and sedatives, waking up in my car with pee all over me and the seat, I would have laughed in disbelief at the thought that one day I would have to clean up the wreckage of my alcohol and drug abuse. I choose drugs over everything and everybody. I was reckless. The scariest part came when I unconsciously chose drugs over life itself, … Read entire article »
