Eating Disorders in Pop Culture

Eating Disorders in Pop Culture

In the industries of acting, singing, and modeling, eating disorders run rampant. What You Crave and Why

What You Crave and Why

People may experience different cravings that compel them to compulsively seek foods, substances or behaviors. Cravings that repeatedly arise have the potential to give birth to full-on addiction if not well-managed. Most of the time, someone’s cravings are only satiated by what they crave. Usually that’s something that isn’t necessarily good for us, such as fast food, ice cream, alcohol, drugs or watching TV. There are some cases where cravings that arise lead us to … Read entire article »

Hunger Games? Nope. Hunger Pains!

Hunger Games? Nope. Hunger Pains!

As a woman, I can definitely attest to the fact that girls get more hungry before their periods. Sometimes I feel like I can eat right through a cement wall! In fact, it’s been scientifically proven. (Well, not the part where I can eat cement. Cause that would be kind of weird, don’t you think?) Why is it though, that women see such an appetite increase during the week right before their periods? Some say … Read entire article »

The Brain Loves Sugar

The Brain Loves Sugar

Sugar is as addictive as cocaine.  Being overweight, says Dr. Michael Roizen, chief wellness officer at the Cleveland Clinic, can be a clear-cut case of too much of a good thing — specifically dopamine, a feel-good chemical that gets released in your brain when you eat something delicious like sugar. Facts about Sugar: The average American eats 156 lbs of added sugar a year. We consume almost 500% more soft drinks than we did in the 1940’s, according … Read entire article »

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Anorexia

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Anorexia

Anorexia, which affects approximately 8 million people in the United States, has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness due to the harsh physical consequences of the disease.  What is even more troubling is that anorexia has a suicide rate that is fifty times greater than that of the general population.  I know from personal experience how the torturous eating disorder thoughts can become enslaving.  Rational arguments against starving rarely work for people suffering … Read entire article »
