What about the Kids!!
A study examined over 800 kids, ages 10 to 24, to compare the influence of delinquency behavior in late childhood development between low and middle income families. The study found that financial status does play a role in delinquency problems: crime, alcohol use disorders and risky sex behaviors; and an early intervention for an adolescent may help avoid such problems. Teens that came from a low income background were two times more likely to participate in early sexual activities; age 11, and more likely to contribute to early delinquency; age 10, than those that came from a middle class background. On the other hand, middle class youth were 1.5 times more likely to get into alcohol use; age 10, than the youth from lower-income backgrounds. Due to early participation in aforementioned … Read entire article »

Mel Gibson… Again
Mel Gibson just can’t seem to get out of the public eye. To add to all of his publicity, Mel got in a one car accident on Sunday on Malibu Canyon road. The police are saying there is no sign of intoxication at the time of the crash. He lost control of his 2008 Maserati that went off-road and hit the rocky hillside bordering Malibu Canyon Road. The cops reported that Gibson was “alert and oriented” while driving that night, but Mel has no recollection of what happened. He states that he had not been drinking, driving drowsy or on a phone at the time of the crash. California Highway Patrol claims it was an accident that could have happened to anybody. To Kill For The Game
It is no coincidence that Phillip Markhoff committed suicide, in many ways it could have almost been predicted that it would happen. Known as the Craigslist killer, Phillip Markhoff was also a former gambling addict. His life path that ended him dead in a jail may be a picture perfect example on the dangers of gambling. Markhoff went down a path of criminal activity to support his gambling addiction by persuading girls from Craigslist and then robbing them. Unfortunately his schemes didn’t end there; Markhoff was arrested and charged with the murder of Julissa Brisman. It is an astounding reality to come to grips to. Addiction is a disease that affects the brain, and can take over a person. Someone with a huge heart and good morals … Read entire article »

Tobacco Lawsuit
There was once a time when smoking was considered sexy. A single cigarette was considered a luxury. Television would advertise cigarette companies targeting “decent and respectable” women. “I’d walk a mile for a Camel,” was a slogan used for Camel cigarettes. Today many commercials on television are making fun of tobacco companies and their products. There are commercials to catch the attention of everyone from kids to adults. There are “Truth” commercials that state statistics of the negative consequences of smoking, and there is the sarcastic “Shards O Glass” commercial. It is safe to say the community at large does not promote cigarette smoking as it used to, in fact it downs it and advises against it. It is fortunate for today’s society that kids aren’t … Read entire article »

Decriminalizing Drugs
Drugs continue to be an issue that has not yet been tamed. Jail time, rehabilitation, prevention programs and stricter policies just don’t seem to be helping any. A different approach needs to be taken, but what is it? Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, former president of the Royal College of Physicians, believes decriminalizing illicit drugs will “drastically reduce crime and improve health.” There seems to be a plentiful amount of evidence showing that the prohibition of drugs has not been successful in reducing health issues or crime rates. According to Prof. Gilmore decriminalization “doesn’t increase the number of drug users,” instead the objective is to help the high number of people already addicted, rather than locking them up. He thinks we should treat addiction as a health … Read entire article »
Battling Sex Addiction
Drug addiction, alcohol addiction, work addiction, these are all known and often talked about problems of our society now a days. Now sex addiction, that’s a new one! After all how can you determine if you are addicted to sex, it is a natural desire everyone is born with, if we didn’t have sex and procreate there would be no population. I have not run into anyone who doesn’t like sex, and I have not met many that wouldn’t drop what they are doing for a little nookie, so does that mean we are addicted to sex and have a problem? The American Psychiatric Association does not include sex addiction in their hand book, but many experts believe sex addiction is real and the Mayo Clinic claims that … Read entire article »

Alcohol Abuse Ranks Highest Among Australians
Maybe Australia isn’t involved with many negative world affairs because much of the population is walking around with a ‘care free’ state of mind. Research has affirmed that Australia has the highest in numbers of alcohol abuse. The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre conducted a study which discovered that one of five Australians abuse alcohol and four out of them go untreated. The study uncovered that young men have the highest rate of predisposed alcohol abuse. Professor Maree Teeson says alcohol abuse is often associated with the influence that drinking has in a person’s life, and not the amount of alcohol one drinks. He also says that seeking help for a drinking problem has a stigma connected with it and therefore many people go untreated for … Read entire article »

Smuggled Teens from Mexico Forced to Work on Marijuana Crops
Many people take risks to better their lives or even save their lives. Sometimes these risks can be innocent or illegal, but what if it is illegally innocent? Two teens were arrested this month for tending to marijuana crops in southern California. One 16 year old boy told authorities that he was working in the fields to pay off a smuggler who brought him to the states through Arizona two weeks prior to his arrest.
