Urban Outfitters Promotes Anorexia with Graphic Tee

Urban Outfitters have printed and distributed a graphic t-shirt reading “eat less”. This has caused controversy in promoting eating disorders and Urban Outfitters is targeted to teenagers, and usually teenagers are impressionable; especially since Urban Outfitters is an influential retail store for what is ‘cool’ and ‘in’. The model used is the campaign is very thin. All the young models in the Urban Outfitters website and catalogs are considered underweight by body mass index (BMI) standards. Some celebrities such as Sophia Bush have expressed anger regarding the pro anorexia graphic t-shirt. Bush writes in her blog, “To promote starvation? To promote anorexia, which leads to heart disease, bone density loss, and a slew of other health problems, not least of all psychological issues that NEVER go away? … Read entire article »

Medical Marijuana Now Legal in Washington D.C.

Medical marijuana is now shockingly legal in the District of Columbia. Washington D.C. is the place looked up to by all states in America as a leading example of what the United States embodies. Legalizing medical marijuana legal on a federal level opposed to a state level is now in question. I cannot see how any other state will be given a hard time to not pass their own legalization of medicinal marijuana. Sixty nine percent of D.C. residents were in favor for wanting the bill to pass. Since this law passed in D.C. it isn’t surprising that the district will have the strictest rules regarding medicinal marijuana regulation. Patients will get a doctor’s prescription just like any other state, yet it will not be like Venice beach, … Read entire article »

Do Celebrities Get Preferential Treatment in Jail?

Although jail is definitely not a spa and does not include pampering, celebrities still get preferential treatment. When Paris Hilton went to jail she was allowed her cell phone for certain hours out of the day in her private cell but still managed to complain about the food she was fed (the food she was fed was not even jail food). When Hilton was released she made a statement to the press that jail had changed her life. She said she meditated while reading Ekchart Tolle books and had decided to help humanity by doing service work for less fortunate children. I have still yet to see any of this progress on her behalf. Of course the main story today is Lindsay Lohan’s stint in the joint. She … Read entire article »

Maryland Proposes Tax Increase for Alcohol Sales

Maryland has proposed to raise their liquor tax by charging a “dime a drink”. In Maryland the last time beer and wine sales tax was increased was in 1972. Tax on spirits was increased more recently in 1995. The advocacy group sent out letters to all candidates running for the state Senate or House of Delegates informing of them of their “dime a drink” campaign. In past proposals even a five cent tax increase did not pass for liquor sales in 2008. The point of increasing the tax is the hope that the money brought in will help pay for health care for the disabled and poor. However, It’s seems unlikely that this proposal will be passed. Head of the health initiative, Vincent DeMarco, says he hopes … Read entire article »

The Great Debate: Legalizing Cocaine

There has been argument that yes there are hard cocaine users, just like there are alcoholics. There are those as well who use cocaine recreationally, “just like champagne!” Since marijuana is on its way for legalization in the United States… what about cocaine? It seems as though the majority does not have an open mind to legalizing cocaine. One side of the debate is that if cocaine is legalized then there will be more control in the streets and crime will diminish. Cocaine will always be around so why keep it in the hands of the cartel and not the government? This argument proposes that there will be less crime and hypothetically questions: How much worse can it get if cocaine is legalized? Their answer: there … Read entire article »

“Digital Drugs” – The New Way Teens Are Getting “High”

iDosing is the latest fad to hit the internet. iDosing is advertised as a “digital drug” that will allegedly alter your state of consciousness in a “safe” way. It’s very questionable whether these “digital drugs” will stick or even become banned. iDosing is a new way for teens (the demographic iDosing caters to) to get ‘high’ legally. At the surface iDosing is seemingly harmless. iDosing consists of several 15 minute tracks of hypnotizing music with titles such as, ‘cocaine’ ‘peyote’ ‘orgasm’ ect. There are videos on youtube of teens being videotaped while ‘getting high’ on iDosing. I found these to look incredibly forced. However, the placebo effect should always be taken seriously, as what these teens believe are the effects of the so … Read entire article »

Heroin users in poor, known African cities, such as Kenya and Tanzania, have found a new way to get high. When users cannot afford heroin or are suffering from bad withdrawals they are injecting others people’s blood who still have heroin in their system. They are sharing the high; it is called “flashblood” or sometimes “flushblood.” The high is not the only thing these helpless addicts are sharing. Undoubtedly so, this puts these people at high risk of contracting HIV and AIDS. There is a 64 percentage of woman who have already contracted the disease among the 42 percent of heroin users who have contracted AIDS from sharing blood in Tanzania. Dr. McCurdy has interviewed women who practice “flushblood” and have found out that most women do … Read entire article »

Lindsay Lohan, An Addict Like the Rest of Us

Lindsay Lohan is a well known name. In the beginning she was known as the cute kid from Disney’s The Parent Trap. Now Lindsay Lohan is a household name for what not to become. All we addicts and alcoholics know exactly this case, yet only our neighbors are aware of our dirty laundry. But Lohan’s case, the entire world-wide population know the sordid details of her private life. As all of us know, Lindsay Lohan obviously suffers from addiction. I do kind of feel bad that she has to wear a SCRAM bracelet which goes off whenever alcohol is consumed because she isn’t allowed to get sober on her own accord. From court-dates to pictures of a woman passed out, a lot of people are judging … Read entire article »
